International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well, I have a few eggs to hatch but I think my thermostat went out! I need Marans chicks! :hit I just ordered the incukit xl for my old GQF cabinet incubator. I am not sure if I needed two heater/fans but I am getting two. Has anyone ever put one of these in? Not sure I can do this!

Try youtube.. I learn to do all kinds of things from youtube. Hope u get it fixed. :(

@Chooks man or anyone:

my friends have always had black copper marans for years. my marans come from them. 1 of the last year cockerels has a brown triangle on his wings like wheaten marans. any explanation?

Wheaten was crossed into the line at some point and the genes have surfaced to show up in the bird. A brown/red wing triangle is an indicator of wheaten.

Marans folks Im friends with in a facebook group say that excessive chest color is a possible indicator of wheaten hidden in a line of black coppers also. If that is the case, my line B birds may have wheaten in them also. I was told that the only way to tell when you are unsure is to test mate to a bird like a rhode island red. If the chicks are black, no wheaten in the line. If the chicks are light or red there is wheaten in the line. I plan on test mating an overcolored cockerel to a wheaten based hen soon to see just out of curiosity.

if the chick hatched with a white/yellow hatch down ,than it is a Wheaten throw back .
if the chick hatched black than it is a mutation . or some thing disturbing the combination of the Autossomal red genes .
we get some time Wheaten cockerel with a Black wing triangle ,doesn t mean it is a cross of a Black copper .

it is a same thing as a BCM cockerel without a Red shoulder .doesn t mean it is a cross to a black strain .just a luck of the Autossomal red genes .

@kfelton0002 . what your friend are saying about a overly marked BCM cockerel chest is not true .they are just talking not based on any genetic explanation .

I said many time before .when we work with a patterned chooks .we have to keep the balance of the color .it is a reason we have SOP .because the genetic will never throw 100% guaranty .
there is a lot mutation as well .a chooks mutate a lot .it is a reason we have so many breed and varieties .

some time we get a overly colored red BCM . still is a BCM not a buff or mixed with a buff .it is just overly marked .that all .disorder of the Autossomal red genes .

@kfelton0002 . you BCM are pure as they can get.

Glad for the reasurrance. I hang around in those groups trying to gain insight on showing, otherwise I would have removed myself from the groups a long time ago. I have picked up quite a few tips and tricks from breeders that show so that's a plus.

would you use for breeding cockerels that are small size, not bigger than hens?

how small is it ? smaller than a hen .how big is a hen?
let say if the hen is too big 4Kg plus than we can use a small cockerel 3Kg over her .

but if the hen is a normal size around 3 Kg than we can not use a small cockerel 3Kg and less .
small marans rooster should weight about 3 Kg. less than why it is required by SOP 3.5Kg

I found one of my girls dead this morning :( I'm not sure what happened or why. I did notice that she'd been in the nest a lot the past 2 days but didn't have time to really investigate. I'm so glad I kept all the babies I hatched on and before New Years. I haven't had any new eggs in weeks due to the cold, dreary days. I'm only left with a pair now. I'm hoping I get some good pullets from this group.

sorry to hear about your loss .

hope you ll get a gorgeous girls from your hatch .

C est la vie with a chooks . they just die.

my friends in athens have 2 cockerels that are small, must be less than 3 kg. the hens are small too. I am going to give them 1 of my boys. I just wanted to know if they should keep one of theirs.
