International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

New to this forum, and new to Black Copper Marans. Our broody hen just hatched out a few chicks from hatching eggs - only 2 of the 9 made it. One is a BCM and I'd love to get any insight anyone has to share - is this the place to post baby chick pics? Our little BCM is 11 days today

Yes please show em off . There are quite a few very knowledgeable folk here that will certainly give you good honest feedback and help you put together a plan if you are trying to work a line. Mine are also 10-11 days old so I'd love to see yours for comparison

Best I could do for now. I'm starting to wonder if I have all girls. The next few weeks will tell.

I think she meant only 2 out of 9 eggs hatched under her broody. Only one of those is pure BCM is what I gathered. Is that right @TinyFlock17 ?

Yes - only 2 hatched of the 9 eggs. And just one is a BCM. And thanks for the warm welcome! Apologizing in advance for the poor photos... 1. I'm not quite sure what the most important elements are to try to capture in a photo and 2. It's almost impossible to get a decent picture of a black chick! Here are a few I took today (day 11) and the fourth picture is from day 7 to show the feathering on his feet. I say "he" because it just seems to be a he, but I hope I'm wrong... if it's a roo I don't think we'll be able to keep him

Oh wow - that would be amazing What are the biggest indicators for trying to sex this breed? Just wondering what to keep my eyes out for. Thanks so much!

Usually in pullets you see more pigment in their comb at that age and their comb is darker is my only hesitation about your chick. Its comb does look a little cockerel-ish on second glance. Keep watching it over the next week. If its a cockerel its comb will grow larger and start turning pink.

Here are a couple of my pullet chicks around the same age. See how dark their combs are?

And here is a cockerel, he may be a little older than yours. But see how his comb is starting to turn pink and growing bigger?

This cockerel has more white on his face than I like to see though.

I vote pullet. in my short experience cockerels already have red wattles at day 8+.

I have had bullets with clear pink combs. they ended up with nice copper hackles.
