International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Very nice! I've been using a lot of Marans eggs in my cooking lately because my husband loves them. He says my cornbread tastes better when I use Marans eggs.. lol.
Well.... we all know James Bond can't be wrong. Everyone loves my eggs too. A very good friend of mine, a southern belle said do you mind if I lick the plate, she wanted every bit of that over easy yolk.

I put 36 eggs in the incubator today. I have orders for 60 chicks. @ Kfelton0002 these cull roosters look very good, they are being culled but any one of them are certainly passable. You really should try again. I can't believe you got the mutant rooster!

Moved my chicks to the ground in my outdoor kitchen. All are doing well. Looks like I have 5-6 pullets and 5-6 Roos in my BCM’s. 13 total counting my crosses. @kfelton0002 pretty sure my blue is a gal! The one chick I lost must have been one of my Marans because I have two crosses in the group.

That's funny.. mutant rooster! If anyone is going to get a mutant rooster, it's me. That's the way my luck goes.

I really would love to try again once I get some thinned out. My incubator is packed, same goes for my brooders at the moment. I have a few pure line B (FRF) chicks growing out now from my trio. I'm really hoping there are a few keepers in there. I'm going to cool off on setting any of my Marans and Legbars until some of the grow outs clear out of the brooders. Once you have your cockerel mated up to some hens/pullets that you think he is good with I may get some eggs from you if you have some extra. I'd say he will produce some spectacular babies! :love
Wow 60 chicks! That's amazing you have an order for that many! :th:ya

Aww they look so good! I'm glad your blue chick ended up being a pullet! I'm hoping she lays a lovely colored egg for you. Looks like you will have a good number to cull through. :D

How did the chick with the brown spot end up looking?

Yes I am ready for them to start laying lol.

That one is banded and it’s one I am on the fence on wether it’s a he or she, still too early to tell. It’s been fun raising from egg to chicken. Haven’t done this in forever.

Yes baby chickens truly are a joy! I've loved them since I was a little kid. lol

If you get a chance take some pics of the banded one. I'd love to see it. :)

I dont blame you, I would keep them and eat them. I had a friend tell me he knew a lady that was looking to buy a bunch of roosters that were old enough to eat. She only wanted to pay $3-5 a piece for them. I'm not selling grown out roosters for that when I've got at least $20 in feed invested in each of them. Yes I think we'll just eat them all ourselves. Lol
I give them away. I have to stop and at least get a few dollars for them or eat them myself. My favorites shift every day. Very hard to pick a cockerel out of this bunch.
