International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I see some really nice type in your birds. Lovely toplines and tail angles. Your cockerels have plenty of color. I think you'll get some nice breeders out of your bunch! :)

I did notice he has a lot of color on his chest (only 1 cockerel but my roo also has extra color in the chest as well as a high tail). The girls are less colored and I'm liking their top lines so thinking this may balance out. It's going to be next year before I find out!!!

Hi there! Recently got some chicks, I’m led to believe this one may be some type of Maran (1 week old)

Some of you might remember, I posted several weeks ago, debating which roo I should keep and one of the suspected Roos looked looked feminine. And then I really wasn't sure if I had a boy or girl in my hands! Update: he started crowing! And now looks like a rooster. Still not sure what bird I should keep? First picture is the pic I posted several weeks ago of the bird in question. The rest of the pics are 18 weeks of age. The bird we weren't sure of gender has a strange tail..looks like something took a big bite out of it. Lol
The breeder that I bought the eggs from that I hatched these guys out of, breeds for egg darkness, not show of the bird.

I knew it! lol

I wouldn't keep the cockerel with the weird tail if it were me. If he has that bad of a squirrel tail now, it will be horrible when he fully matures. The other cockerel has too much copper leakage on his chest, but at least his tail is lower. He needs to be mated to hens with little to no copper in their hackles to keep from throwing way overcolored offspring. Best of luck with them! Sorry you ended up with 2 cockerels instead of a pair.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm greatful for your knowledge! I've only owned chickens for 2 years and these are my first roosters ever. I do have a 10 week bcm that I hatched out, I'm pretty sure is female. She's black all over, just a tiny bit of dark copper coming through on the back of her neck. Very small comb, just starting to turn pink. I think I have hope!

When you get a chance, you should post pictures of the your young one for us :)

Ok, here are some pics of my girl (hopefully!) sorry, not the best pictures, she's super skittish and doesn't hold still. And I counted back to the hatch date, she's actually 12 weeks old. What do you all think?

Others may not agree with me but at 10 weeks, I'm thinking roo :/ Those tail feathers look curved in the second picture and with that much pink at 10 weeks old, I don't know. I hope I'm wrong. At the same time, most of the Marans I've raised have had bigger and pinker combs at that age though. I'm not experienced enough yet.....Hopefully the experts will know better.

Oh, I hope you're wrong! She/he is actually 12 weeks. And very small..my roos were at least double that size at that age, so that's the hope I've been clinging to!
