International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

So my group is a little over 18 weeks now. Maybe some input on how the cockerel is coming along?

These are pretty indicative of his natural stance, tail angle, etc. Tried to get most angles. I know he still has some filling out to do, but thoughts are welcome! Does he have too much color on his sides? He has zero copper on the chest.

And a pretty pullet.

I think he's looking really good! I was suprised how much my cockerel filled out toward the 8-9 month mark. Until then I worried he was small (confession: even weighed him every few weeks). I'm curious what the more knowledgeable folks will say. His tail looks great to me. I remember @Chooks man remarking on folds in a waddle once- which I think I see in yours. Comb looks good- maybe shy a point and a bit funky up front- Not sure how that factors but I know it's an easy fix and not to be concerned much even when showing (1 point? If that's your game). Legs are feathered nicely - and I see your pullets are a bit sparse so he will balance that out. Your pullets are pretty!!! I see how their feathers are green sheen- I hope someone explains this and how it breeds cuz I don't get that piece yet.

Lovely birds :)

Freckles toyed with going broody last week but when she didn't stay my man put the eggs in the fridge (it's been really humid here). Now it looks as though she is in it to win it.

Question: I'd really like to just let her sit on the CLB eggs - mated with my Blue copper cock these would be easily sexed and I wouldn't have to guess which is olive egger eggs. My only layers are him over either the Cream Legbar, freckles the cuckoo, or an Easter egger. Can I pull eggs out of the fridge? A woman I gave a marans cockerel too hatched his eggs after he was taken by a predator 17 of 19 hatched despite they were in the fridge and some had even frozen as it was winter. I only have 2 of my CLB eggs on the counter and won't give freckles eggs till the weekend long as she stays put.

Won’t hurt to try it. And you can check them in a few days for fertility while you collect new ones. Swap out after a week if necessary.

I'm not sure wether to be embarrassed or giggle by my response but... the CLB is a favorite judging from her wing/back feathers. I had rehomed all but a few of my hens and separated Chester and harem from the chicks by building a new coop = chester only has 3 ladies. He's polite enough. 2 of them disagree with his advances often and he moves on. I suspect Penny doesn't mind.

There’s one in every group :p

(Chester didn’t get his name from an old comic strip/magazine character, did he??)

No- actually he got it after Chester Bennington. His crow is well... He screams. And if you ever heard of the band Linkin Park you'll get it. I love music.

Ah ah ah ahhh! :D

Oh, and thanks for the comments on my flock. Appreciate the insights. I have other breeds that I’ve learned what to look for, who to mix with who, color combinations, etc, but these guys are my first BCMs and still learning from you guys.
