International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well with chickens anything and everything can and probably will happen at one point or another. I feel like a bad mommy! I found one of my older Harvey Blue Copper cockerals. He looked to be laying next to the metal feeder. I thought why is he laying there like that? He had his toe caught in the handle and was hanging there. His toe was squished and I was worried it was broken. He was dragging his foot behind him and flopping it forward when he walked. It has been 3 days now and he is much better. I feel like I need to child proof everything. I didn't think there was much out there they could get hurt on. Boy was I wrong! Bad mommy!

I had similar situation with a silkie pullet. her toe nail got stuck on a wooden board they use to get into pen. it is incredible how easily they can get hurt. we cannot child proof everything.

Thank you, i work very hard on all my chicken stuff. Its really nothing special, Just a bunch of salvaged materials piled in the shape of a coop.
Your pens look awsome. We used mostly recycled ourselves. My husband doesn't throw anything away. The only things we bought new was the hardware cloth, brackets, screws and a few posts. We started out with a lot of posts but after 4 houses and 4 pens. It was about time some of this old lumber, old doors and old windows got used. It was a win win and I am happy! I could use another pen and house though! Lol

In the fall I'll be clearing some land to build 4 25'x100' pens, the one thing I've learned since ive started breeding is you need lots of room and lots of pens for grow outs.

Lucky you! I am so jealous! My husband has said no more pens. We don't have room for anymore. We do have room but it would be a ways from our house and harder to get water to them.

well i guess you could say im lucky I'm the husband, and can get out there and build whatever my little heart desires. My goal is to breed the best marans i can, and in my experience you have to hatch and grow out lots of birds so i really don't have any choice, i got to build more and bigger pens to let my birds reside when there not breeding. Ill use my current set up strictly for penning my birds i choose for breeding.

Good answer, your the husband! I agree we have to raise a lot of birds. Like I said go back to the first few pages in this thread, 2,000 birds 90 keepers!! I am paying about $150 a month for feed and I only have 30 birds. What is the cost for 2,000 birds. I mostly give all my eggs to the Senior Center. I eat all my cull birds. I have Black Copper Marans because I like the color and confirmation of the SOP Cock. I can see no way that this would every be profitable for me! I raise these birds for the pursuit of the perfect bird. TOM ps (I think all my birds are perfect) They just have a few faults!!

Yes, You do need lot's of pens. I really do need some grow out pens too. You are lucky you can get out there and build whatever you want. I have only one good arm so even if my husband said I could build a pen. There is no way I could. I am dependant on him for any pen building. You know if you need practice on building pens!!! Lol
