International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

from the photos .Shiraz is a better looking and correct hen .
Queen =Dark eggs
Shiraz = Type and mass

work with them both with a cockerel to capture both traits .
Shiraz will help you better to breed for the Show if bred back to her grand son .you saying he is correct .you want to capture that is this line .

mate him to both and work with they progeny as half sibling /cousin line . the best cockerel from Queen X Son will cover the best pullets from Shiraz X grand son and verse versa . you end up with a pure inbred line with many great traits.

I have been doing a lot of study when I was in Europe last 4 months and I learn body type and mass are the first to be bred true . you can not breed any other trait properly if the bird has a wrong body type or lucking mass .
body type and body carriage plus mass they make up 70 point in a total of the score card .

Yes that's why Queen and Sheraz are my two best girls, both good for different reasons but related and from the same line so they carry a lot of the same genetics. You reflect my plans exactly to line breed using them and the cockerel. Yes Sheraz is definitely better type wise, I agree. She is a big girl. Lol.

Whew what a year!
Can’t believe it’s been so long since I was on here. Has Chooks Man come back? Last I remember he sold his flock I think. Somehow don’t have any Marans pics on my phone, but I do have this odd rooster. And adorable hen that I HAD to share with you. These two are Ayam Cemanis. Supposedly pure. However, we are almost 100% sure this roo is crossed with maybe a Marans? Not sure. Opinions? He has copper everywhere a Maran would have it, but no leg feathers.[/QUOTE

yeah this guy is a cross with some golden type choock. Wheaten or Black copper marans or some thing else .

View attachment 1555166 Eek. Just weeks ago I was complaining on not getting eggs. My 3 have been laying for a couple weeks now and at a good clip. I'm thinking they are taking a day off every 4th day. They are now 24 wks. I'm happy with the color too. The girl with a full copper hackle lays a speckled egg. Pretty for the basket but not a great match for my Roos. She lays the lightest egg also. I can't wait to hatch from the other 2. They have hardly any copper showing and lay a tad darker

Gorgeous . Bravo

Here's a picture of the best boy I have left. Hercules (green boy) wasn't very cooperative but I tried. He's not terrible but has some white in his tail, shafting his chest and a little bit of a halo but he'll to do. Blue boy was beautiful. I'm thankful I still have this boy to use though. I didn't take any pictures of black boy. His tail is borderline squirrel tail and he has white on his wing and tail. He would only be used in an emergency.

Here is my cockerel from Max and #8. Not looking too shabby. He is a slow featherer. Oh and pardon the mud, it has been raining for DAYS.

My biggest gripe is he holds his wings too high I think.

he is great .love his body type and mass .look chunky to me .super wide at the shoulder .great , love his copper .rich red
he is going a be a big rooster .thick and heavy .
there is nothing wrong with his wing .there is no such a thing as holding them high . holding them low is a fault but not high .
holding them high sigh of strength and dominance .
how he is looking now ?

Here are my three candidates. Red white and blue leg bands. I think blue which was the better of the three earlier. Now has been beaten out by red band and maybe even white. I think white is younger so time will tell. Sorry picture heavy! Last picture is red tag.

Tails are springing up but I still look forward to using them next spring. These are some big girls - same size as my roo and the cockerel is already bigger than him. Hard to get good pics though. The cockerels eyes are starting to look better. They were quite marbled before.

they are nice .
last pullet has a gorgeous and correct comb . pretty face too .

He has really nice coloring. Thankfully I have 2 very dark hens with minimal copper to put him over

ETA: that is not a halo. Lighting. He has no hint of a halo

he has a correct copper and enough of it . need more on the shoulder and back ,still young , his comb is not a best .
he is with a wrong hen my friend .
