International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Im sorry you lost a lot of youngsters.
Cross contamination can decimate a flock. I know.

Hoping everything goes smoothly with fixing up the new farm and moving the breeders over. You have your hand full and im sure you will make it a wonderful place for them.

I ll be moving to my new farm mid November if every thing goes well . first have to build all the coops and runs I need from scratch again . will be using shipping container as coops .fast and solidly build . new place has no trees ,it is open to the to the weather .
good thing about the new place I will be living there .so no more travelling to Sydney. all country life .

4 x 40 foots shipping containers .
10 x{ 50 metre X 1.8 m X 2 5 cm } .chooks wire
4 x { 50 m x 1.2 m X 2.6 cm }chooks wire
lot of timber
4 x 50m x 3m shade cloth . commercial type .to cover the container and give the chooks some shade .
4 x 1000 L water tanks and pipe /fitting .

Im very curious about the shipping containers. They are metal. How will they stay cool even with the shade cloth.

I know that you know what you are doing, im just full of questions.

That sounds like an awesome set up.
Very organized and i can see how this would be an excellent coop plan.

And you living there makes it even better. I know it must be a pain in the arse not being close to them.

I miss the farm we sold. If i knew i would be breeding bcm a year ago, we would not have sold it and moved. I miss the land. There was 13 acres. Here, i have no room to build anything else.

But i have a huge deck on the front of the house with a lot of room under it.......hmmmmm...

It's not cheap on my small scale. I couldn't even imagine what your cost would be for 2 farms and 100s of Marans. Wow

I banded the cockerels last night. Tonight I need to band the pullets. None of the younger pullets came out of the house. Here are some pictures of 3 BC pullets and one BLC pullet that's the same age as Black Jack and Ace. I didn't get very good pictures. This will have to do till everyone has bands.

You said something about some Splash pullets? I need to read up on it, if I remember right My BC cock with a Splash will make Blues right. When the weather cools a bit we need to get together. It was 95 again today. Post pics of the Splash if you can and tell me about egg color Thanks TOM

Your BCM pullets are gorgeous! They have good type, eyes, copper hackles, medium sized legs (nicely feathered) and classic tails (short, tented, good angle). BLCM has good type, eyes, tight well-laced feathers, medium sized legs (well feathered). She needs more copper on her hackles. I would mate Ace to your BLCM then mate both Black Jack and Ace to your BCMs to see which pairings produce better chicks.

Yes, That breeding would produce blue but I am not sure on that mating. I will try and get pictures tomorrow.

Yes, BCM x Splash will produce 100% blue chicks. The problem with Splash is that you can’t really see the true color of the bird because the diluter genes washes out the color. With that said, I have done this type of pairing with good results. My Splash hen had good type, redish-orange eye and was my darkest egg layer (#7) but she only laid 2-3 eggs per week. Here are some pics of the BLCMs I hatched from the BCM x Splash Pairing. I still have these BLCM and they lay as dark as their Dam.
