I just finished putting Negan in the freezer.

Looking him over before culling him, I noticed how much parasitic white he had under his hackles that couldnt be seen unless I part his feathers.

If you remember, he had the worst hatch down as a chick.

The big question is, will his 3 half sisters from line#1 pass this on too.
I guess we will have to wait and see what they hatch out using the line #2 cockerels.

I DO know i will not keep any chicks with bad hatch down.

bad hatch down affect the underfluff color quality .
BCM chicks should have mostly black hatch down with a minimum white possible but all black neither .

only test mating would tell if the pullets are a carriers or not .

The hens / pullets usually don’t express parasitic white. The only way to really know is test mating. Chicks with too much white hatch down get tagged as a meat bird.

Thats the tricky part. They dont usually express the parasitic white. Only pass it on in their offspring.

One of the pullets from line #1 actually has a small dot of white on her shoulder. I take that as an omen. I will get a picture later today.

One of those 3 from line #1 is laying a lighter egg. I really need to get a color chart. To me it looks like a 4.
Too early in her laying cycle for that and I need to find out who it is.

Could you please post an example of too much white? Do you keep that sort of thing on file?

The chick on the far left is an example of too much white (see side of face). I’ve seen much worse though. I prefer chick down like the chick that is front center. The only white that should be showing should be throat, belly and bottom half of butt.

if you test mate your breeders and you take not as the chicks grow you will be able to find a good and the bad breeder .
keep the good one and get ready of the rest .few years time you will have some nice marans .

good looking chooks is not always guaranty is a good breeder .

last night I penned some breeders for 2021 Autumn hatch .using mostly the older hens and few large old pullets 13 months and over . let see what i get out of them .
pen #1 . BC and BLC = Conan the Barbarian 13 months old now BLC his hens are BC Gazelle .Philippine , Amor and over 2 years old hens plus LoveSong 13 months old young hen .half sister to CTB .
Blue copper are Dark Angel 13 months old half sister to CTB plus Dalakhania #2 .16 months old .

pen #2 = Splash copper rooster Khabib over the best in type hens and old pullets .
Khabib has a good body type but his back is a little shorter .his pullets turn up to be square type . dark eggs layer . so I penned his with long back hens .
2 Recessive white hens over 2 years old .best on type and mass .large egg but not dark 3/4 .
2 BLC without hackle . 13 months old ..half sister to khabib from the dam s side . those hen are very heavy and long .eggs color 4/5 large .
2 Splash copper 13 months old .sisters to the BLC hens .one of them lay very dark egg .still laying them now . her sister is more heavier and longer .bad floppy comb .Khabib has a correct comb .
1 Splash copper best of his daughter 16 months old . big and lay dark egg ,nice comb too . they progeny will have square body type . dark eggs layer .and faultless combs .

expecting big chicks ,fast grower too .
these hens will be bred to Khabib for a month ,than to his son Samir #2 Dominant white rooster .
