International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Of course you are right@ chooks man.
I love your straight talking.
It keeps me on track.

You are the sound of reason in the crazy world of marans and i appreciate that.

These chooks just might be exactly what i need for my line.

They dont look so bad in the incubator.

I m not breeding marans to prove any points .I m breeding them because I like them and I like challenges .other wise I ll breed other easy chooks breed .

marans chooks are superior to other chooks because of the dark eggs genes . to breed them properly they need a specific breeding program ,that is a reason why we don t have many well bred mrans ,peoples trying to breed them with they basic breeding method .most of them don t work on marans .

dark cuckoo silver/golden marans rooster 16 months old . free from parasitic white . plaing to breed him to BC and BLC dark eggs layer .I have few him . will get golden cuckoos and other color too .
this guy is thick ,short ,wide and heavy . best tail in my farm . short ,full and a correct angle .free from any white .
his Sire is Black Mamba over dominant white hen. Greenland .his dam lay dark eggs 6/5 and his true sister lay #6 egg for a long period .
looking forward to see his progeny .short and plum ,

his comb is too big but correct point texture ,points number and elevated lobe .wattle are too large too . like his sire .

if cockerels will show white underfluff ,than we don t use them ,we only use pullets .
to build any line it is better to have one sire line and many dams lines .
the line you are trying to build will be sired by line #2 roosters . we need may different hens from different line .we don t need roosters .

here just a example of breeding practice .
line #2 rooster X line #2 pullets . sibling breeding just one time . we keep the best pullets and best cockerels .make sure no white in this line .we call them line #2.pure
line #2 rooster X pullets line #1 = we only keeping best pullets we call them line #1.
line #2 rooster X pullets line #3 new one - we only keep pullets . we call them line #3 .

by the end of the breeding season ,we should have related progeny with a lot genetic variation to work with .
I will tell you the rest of the breeding method when time come .
for now focus in achieving this stage .all tugged and healthy .very important to mark the eggs and the chicks ,other wise this method will no work .

This is the info i have been missing.
The one sire line and many dams line.

I did not know this.

It opens up a lot more understanding of what you are trying to tell me.

-Line #2 cockerels are my sire line

-I still have line#1 pullets (3)
One is laying a light egg, one lays a very dark egg. But i think we are in agreement to get rid of them?

-Line #2 (5) all nice looking, most with full copper hackles, one is a little small. So far, the couple that are laying, they are dark eggs.

-That one and only pullet that hatched out of shipped eggs. I had added her to line #2 when they arrived as live chicks. (Shes banded).

-Whatever pullets hatch from these eggs.
And i DO NOT keep any cockerels from these eggs if they show any white.

yes you are correct .
line #1 pullets we keep the dark eggs layer only .
line breeding with many sib lines is the only way to breed great and correct marans ,dark eggs layer , that will take time .
