International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Do these 3 week old chicks look to be pure black copper marans? I hatched them in my homemade modified toaster oven incubator. I set 12 eggs. Lost one to a blood ring early. I also dropped one while hand turning. 10 made it to lockdown and 8 hatched. 2 were fully developed dead in the shell when I stopped the incubation on day 23. The 8 that did hatch all came out clean without any help right on time.

The only reason I doubt that they are anything but pure marans is the price I paid for the eggs. I gave $10 for a dozen eggs. People in this area are asking $20 a dozen for what they happily admit are barnyard mix eggs. Now I just saw that the seller posted a new add asking $.50 and egg or $6 a dozen. I really don’t need any more birds but that just seems like a price that’s hard to pass up.

Anyway I’m very new to this whole chicken keeping world and I’m not sure what to look for in a quality chick. I’m not really into show birds or anything I only got the first batch because they were local, low priced, and would add color to my egg basket. Now that I have a few I’ve been reading and watching videos on the breed and I’m getting more excited about marans in specific.

I know these are not Marans but I couldn't help myself! How cute is this! Everyone is sleeping except my problem child that is awake and getting into trouble. All 4 of them are my problem children. Soon after hatch when I moved them into brooder. They where getting into everything. Hopping over to the chick side and getting trapped under straw. I was rescuing some one all day yesterday. It is much better today.

they look like marans.

people don't hatch now due to heat so if that guy has eggs he probably prefers to get some money for them.

I went out and found all my 6 pheasant chicks dead. I do not know what got them. We are assuming weasel but they are intact. I am not seeing bit marks or anything just dead. They where all fine yesterday. Now I am worried about the rest.
sorry to hear that ,that is terible ,
if it is a weasel they should have marks on them I think .but what else ?

Thank you! I have been out trying to put that steal hardware cloth up without the proper tools. It's not going so well. I need a chisel. I can't get the wire between the beam and wall. Knife and screwdriver is so slow! I am sure that's what those tools are used for right!!!!! Lol If my husband cared about his tools he would be here helping. Plus he is the organizer and no one can find anything. Not even him most of the time! Lol
sorry but that is cool the person who organize the tool can not find them ,who else is going to find them then .haha

Thank you, that’s what I wanted to here. I suspected it was a cockerel based on comb size and color but wasn’t real positive because I’m still pretty inexperienced. It’s still fun to guess. I have 2 that I strongly feel rare likely male and 3 females and 3 wait and see
