Here's the mutant mottled pullet in the daylight.

Do you think a real mottled project would be worth anything?
I think it would be interesting to see how it breeds but you should keep this separate from the breed standard birchen ones to keep white out of them. You might be able to develop your own line of mottled marans but they aren’t breed standard so not valuable as show birds.

I’m not familiar with what marans you have but it could be interesting to try it with different colours.

It's wild how everyone else has such massive comb and wattles on their marans where I have medium sized through and through, some hens leaning to teeny sized single combs. Do other people who face cold extremes in winter find that their flock's comb size diminishes over time?
My friend your line has a proper Marans small to medium comb. Other breeders selected for a large 5 points comb . That is a problem. I have many strain in my farm most of them have a small proper Marans comb but few have this massive combs.

I wonder if heat in greece is responsible for huge combs here.

this pullet both her parent are a carriers of one copy of mottling gene Mo+ , she inherited 2 copies one from each parent . It is a complete mottling pattern I don t think it s nutation .
You have to test mate the chooks you are thinking are her parent to see if they throw more or not. It is the only way to find out if it s mutation or a proper gene.
She is gorgeous by the way .

@chickengr, are you having any luck with your birds? How is the homestead coming along?

lost 1 indian runner to my dog - that's my luck. no marans out of 4 chicks survived. the same problem with australorp chicks. I think we have here too much inbreeding. I have to work with my own birds and bring a roo every 2-3 years for new blood.

my house is not finished, garden about 10% planted, some planted trees died at the end of august due to hot wind. I need time to take care of everything.

I also plan to add a few goats and vietnamese pigs (pot-bellied).
