you can slather it with petroleum jelly or comparable, it can add a layer of cold protection and a moisture barrier to help healing. It does indeed look a bit frostbit to me now that a little time has past. adding petroleum jelly or comparable during a cold spell can stave off frostbite. It’s been 5 days since Axl’s comb got frostbite. Nothing has completely shriveled up but the black parts look to be getting darker. I can’t tell if it’s just the outer most layer or if it goes deeper. I have not tried to clean it because I don’t see any signs of infection so I don’t want to open it up to infection. I don’t know if that the correct thing to do but I just feel like it’s a don’t pick a scab sort of thing.
the color looks to be returning to the parts that were turning white so I think it is healing like it should. I guess I’ll just continue to monitor it and try to be hands off as long as nothing looks or smells infected.

Thanks, the temperature here has wormed up (upper 30s to lower 50s degrees) for now so I don’t think they have any risk of getting it again soon. But I’ll make sure I have some petroleum jelly on hand for the next cold weather.you can slather it with petroleum jelly or comparable, it can add a layer of cold protection and a moisture barrier to help healing. Those are some good looking eggs. I hope whenever mine start laying they look that good. Still no sign that mine will start anytime soon. The barred rock and Easter Eggers are starting to explore the nest boxes so maybe they are close.I love them speckled ones.. this one is a tad bigger.

That's a pretty good indicator...Those are some good looking eggs. I hope whenever mine start laying they look that good. Still no sign that mine will start anytime soon. The barred rock and Easter Eggers are starting to explore the nest boxes so maybe they are close.
Mine have never squatted for me. The first round of pullets didn’t even squat for the cockerel until after they were laying. I haven’t witnessed the cockerels mounting any the girls recently but every egg I crack appears to be fertilized so I’m sure they are making their rounds just not as often was happening in the summer months. That's a pretty good indicator...
Most all of my pullets squat for me when I reach down to try to pet them about a week or so before they start to lay.
Yours might not for you with cockerels in the pen, if they are mating.
I try to keep all my pullets separate from the Roos until they are at least 6 mos., which is really still too early for them.
8 mos to a year old is better I've been told...
doesn t look bad at all .It’s been 5 days since Axl’s comb got frostbite. Nothing has completely shriveled up but the black parts look to be getting darker. yes they should be pigeon blue with thinner lacing ,that what French SOP are promoting .Should BlCMs have lacing? For some reason I thought they shouldn’t, but maybe I’m mistaking it for another breed (Brahma maybe). I know it isn’t Wyandotte type lacing, just the type you see in andalusians, but I remember hearing one standard that says no lacing.
Edit: I think I’m talking about Leghorns, since Blue Marans aren’t standard anyway.
absolutly stunning ,speckle egg always win for me .I love them speckled ones.. this one is a tad bigger.

That's a good thing, tho. Sounds like your boys are well mannered and the older ones are teaching them to be respectful. Be thankful, it can go haywire in a matter of seconds.Mine have never squatted for me. The first round of pullets didn’t even squat for the cockerel until after they were laying. I haven’t witnessed the cockerels mounting any the girls recently but every egg I crack appears to be fertilized so I’m sure they are making their rounds just not as often was happening in the summer months.
I did see my oldest cockerel, the BYM, dance for the barred rock once. She ignored him and he moved on. The marans cockerels made a few attempts at some of my older girls a month or so ago but the girls chased them away. I guess love is just not in the air this time of year
