International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

The cold was very hard on all my chickens, the Legbars more than the Marans. We ended up breaking some record lows, and did end up getting to -44 degrees, so I am not sure anyone made it out without comb damage. One guy damaged his lungs a bit, so he is getting antibiotics since there is the worry of pneumonia and other things for animals that develop a rattle after cold weather.

Sorry for your troubles. That is some severe cold. Hope everyone recovers and the antibiotics help your boy. I know those temps are hard on you too.

We have seen temps from 17f to 75f all in the last week. It has been 65f the last 2 mornings at 5am. Crazy to freeze and sweat all in a couple days. Now I have a cold. :sick

My birds are handling it well thankfully.
Just hoping my blueberries and hydrangeas don't start leafing out. It's not spring yet.

Yikes... That's gotta be rough, I hope everyone recovers for you. Spending half my life in Northern Michigan snowbelt I can kinda relate (I had a snow shovel in my mudroom to get out the door), I refer to that area as "you shovel your way to work, and shovel your way home again" but never experienced that kind of cold that I can recall or want to anyway... 🙂

I'm happy to hear you doing ok, Nana. We're forecasting 50's by next week. Had 2 full day rains so far and mid 30's and the 4-6" of snow is just about gone. Such a weird winter so far.
I'm fortunate enough to have the birds in my pole barn so it kept them around 10-20 degrees above outside temps. I did end up building a subfloor for the ducks to get them off the concrete (2" foam, 2x4 frame then osb sheeted). 6" bedding on top of concrete was still cold I felt for them, maybe not but why not.
I'm doing the same for the brooder coop for the babies coming. Next winter they'll all be outside hopefully if I can get all the coops built in time.

Here’s a good look at the other cockerel named pee-wee.

I’m not too good with chicken names, but he’s visually the smallest. He’s a good boy. Doesn’t mind being picked up. Here’s a good video of him looking around and being still.

They’re obviously nice and calm around you. This video highlights their natural stance well. Both boys don’t have squirrel tail, which is good. Peewee’s tail is better than the other’s because it’s just a bit lower and shorter, but the other’s still isn’t too high. The pullet in the video looks nice too.
