Yesterday I released about 30 chickens so I could move their pens. They all began foraging and for the most part stayed as discrete groups they were part of in the pens. One group (adult American Dominiques) went down to the base of a Persimmon tree and based on crop distention consumed a lot of fruit. Rooster then simply walked off by himself paying not attention even to other roosters and settled in at barn well over 300 feet from where he normally operated. Hens basically fell asleep standing very near the tree and seemed to teeter a lot. Recovery complete within four hours but they went to sleep with empty crops. All normal this morning.

Could it be the tannins in the persimmons? Yikes!

No, the Persimmons fermented. You can smell the alcohol coming of them. Normal for this time of year and hazard for fall fruit eating songbirds.
