Hello BYC group. My wife and I are new retirees, have moved to the country in Eastern Ontario Canada and want to get some egg laying chickens next spring. I'm a retired Chef and my better half was an RN in palliative care. She's also a great cook and baker, knits, reads and enjoys playing her Celtic harp. I'm a graphite wildlife artist, intermediate photographer, drummer and love designing and building furniture.
We've always loved everything about the country life and hopefully it's everything we dreamed of.
At this time we're doing our research so we can build the best coop and getting information on chickens that will do well in our climate and a few have to be fancy according to my wife, lol.

You can’t do it this way!!!! Part of the fun is choosing your set number of chicks..... deciding you just want ‘one more’ and then you’re staring at twice (or more) the number of chicks you were planning on having in the first place.

Then, you start on your coop. It’s generally a race between getting the coop done vs the time it takes the horde of chicks you ‘inadvertently’ collected to start flying out of the brooder and sleeping in your shoes.

Then, finally rushing them to the coop to contain the land dwelling Krakens..... its a rush to put a big enough run together that is predator proof and safe for the ladies.

About the time you finish with that, the combs are red, they’re getting close enough to make you wonder if they are EVER going to lay an egg.......

See the appeal of doing it this way???? Me either!!!

Good to see you come aboard. There’s a ton of advice from very knowledgeable people here. I can’t wait to finally see the ‘other way’ to get started with chickens.
