(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens, although my husband has had some experience raising chickens when he was a child and teenager. My dad raised chickens after I was already out of the house and while I learned a lot when visiting, I, unfortunately, missed out on the whole learning experience of raising chickens. Very excited to be doing this while my kids are young. We will all be learning together.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
A week ago, we began with 3 one-week old chicks, and 2 day old chicks. Then a few days later, we added 3 more of the younger chicks, and then added two of the older (one-two weeks?) chicks. I believe we have 5 RIR, 3 EE, and 2 black sex-linked chicks. Although, I can't be entirely sure - maybe they could be Barred Rocks? 10 in all - which is the limit in our city.
(3) What breeds do you have? As told above. LOL.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Scouring the internet because now I have become obsessed. I've learned a lot by reading the forums.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I am a speech-language pathologist and have my own practice in my home. I also own an online boutique store that sells the most adorable kids clothes. I've also just begun to learn to play the piano - another lifelong goal I have had. And, to make it even more fun, I'm getting ready to build raised bed gardens in my backyard.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have a husband, 4 kids, 2 bonus daughters (what I call my step daughters) that visit during the summer and winter. I have an Australian Cattle Dog that is about 3 years old, and an old grumpy cat about 7 years old. I've already carefully "introduced" my Australian Cattle Dog Mix to the baby chicks in hopes that she will gain the understanding to "protect" them. It's a work in process...lol!
