Am new to posting, but have been reading BYC posts for months for information to help me take care of 3 pet chickens that belong to my brother. I want to put sand in the run but want to make sure it is the correct kind. Can some one recommend a specific brand as reviews for "play sand" have not covered suitability for chickens? They all seem to focus on use for sandboxes, and landscape projects. Any assistance is appreciated. Thank.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Sand does not compost and can get very stinky after it's been pooped on for a few weeks.
Dry, well drained organic matter works very well to bed down a run as it drains, will cold compost the poop, the chickens love to dig around in it and can wallow out holes in it for dust bathing.
I use a 4-6" layer of wood chips in the run that I get for free at a local Highway Department.
