Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

I just found this admittance process for the APA SOP. I found this at http://www.apa-abayouthpoultryclub.org/educational_material.htm. Scroll down the left side until you find the subtitle "know your breed/class/variety" and under that title you will find a link called "adding breed varieties to the standard". According to this it seems both Walt and Glenn may have been right.

Kari- when you contact the APA president, they may be a good starting place.

AMERICAN POULTRY ASSOCIATON
ADMISSION OF NEW BREEDS AND VARIETIES

A petition for recognition of any breed or variety must be sent to the Secretary giving the history of it’s origin, breeding
background & facts of an educational nature. Must include proposed name of breed or variety with the standard for shape, color and weight. Applications to both
associations (ABA & APA) must be of the same description, etc. Affidavits need be included from not less than
five breeders that they have bred the breed or variety for not less than
five years and it produces not less than 50% of all specimens reasonably true to type, color, size & comb. Breeds or Varieties need to have been exhibited for two years prior at a show officiated by a licensed APA judge. The secretary will contact these judges for his or her confidential opinion of the quality and uniformity. A $$ deposit of a sum sufficient to defray the actual cost of placing the text in the Standard shall be received with the petition to be returned if this case is rejected. The petition will then be referred to the Standard committee who shall name a qualifying meet at a prominent show to be judged by a licensed APA judge. This meet shall consist of not less than fifty (50) specimens exhibited by five (5) exhibitors in all classes of cock, hen, cockerel, pullet. When satisfied the committee shall then recommend it’s acceptance by the Board of Directors, upon which it becomes a recognized breed or variety.

One question that I'd like you to ask Kari, is whether that 5 years of breeding experience has to be consecutive or not. I raised them for 3 years then took a break from them for a few years and now I've got them again. At the end of this year, I'd have 4 total years raising the breed, but only 1 consecutive year.

Thanks for this Curt.

A lot to be done here. What shows are possible for fullfilling these requirements? I wont even have chicks for another ten days. I'd have to get several from someone just to be able to show this year.

Do we have five exhibitors to fullfill this?? Or would this be year one for the showing requirement.

I am also wondering what shows held in MI could be eligible.

I do know of a big one in Lansing. Not sure of the date though.

Thoughts ? Comments?

Come on chicks ! Hatch !

At the moment we have a lot of unanswered questions! But Kari is taking this on, so it shouldn't bee too long and we'll have a plan worked out. We're going to try to get the Standard Committee together sometime around the end of June to see what Kari has gathered and to "draw" out a plan.

Another question I have would be whether the minimum 5 breeders have to be raising them for 5 years before we can start our two years of "qualified" showing, or can the two years of showing be counted towards the 5 years of raising the breed?

On a much lighter side, my oil lamp idea to keep the incubator warm seems to have worked wonderfully! I had two clutches in the incubator with the first clutch due today. As of this morning 10 of the 11 eggs are hatched and the 11th egg is externally pipped! So far I've got 7 Birchen, 2 Silver Penciled, and 1 Silver Duckwing! Kari- my wife is beyond excited about the Silver Duckwing chick!!! As I'm sure you can imagine! hahaha Hopefully the last pipped egg will hatch out a Silver Penciled!!

I'll candle my other clutch probably tomorrow or Saturday night to see how they survived our oil lamp rescue! I've got 16 eggs in this next clutch. Exciting times!

Well, let me know if I should do anything regards showing. I'll help if I can. I've only been raising them for about a year and a half now. But I show regularly (at the same shows with Walt, LOL) and would be happy to bring suitable birds along.

I've never been involved with this in poultry, but I was involved with acceptance of new varieties with ARBA while showing rabbits. The procedures are much the same.

Deb! Your experience will definately come in handy. As well as your connection with Walt!

We'll keep everyone in the loop as we figure out our "game plan" in the upcoming month.

It turns out yesterday's hatch yeilded up 3 Silver Penciled chicks instead of 2! Very exciting. So the hatch numbers are as follows......6 Birchens, 3 Silver Penciled, and 1 Silver Duckwing.

I am increasingly anxious abut my eggs from Kari, heavy storm last thurs eve with a 3.5 hr power outage, temp inside the incubator dropped down to 90, even with a blanket over it, I moved the first bunch to the hatcher yesterday, if all is well they should start pipping this tuesday, and karis next week.

Life goes on. I will keep trying on all fronts. This first batch is my Delawares and Icelandics.

I am looking forward to hearing of the work on the standard and showing.

Congratualations Kurt on the hatch !
