Is anyone else against spaldings.

I breed Spaldings and I like Spaldings. They make the different colors and patterns more vibrant. In bronze , all of the pieds the blackshoulder patterns and the Brown colors ( cameo, peach and purple ) I sell these as Spaldings because a lot of people like the color improvements. I keep records of breedings on most of what I want to do with
Spaldings . I have a 7/8 peach hen that is going to be a nice looking bird with a lotal different color than a peach hen.. she is still a peach hen due to her genitics. I think that no bird is a mutt as they can carry the genes of different colors and or patterns. Some of the best breeder peafowl will be birds with multiple colors and patterns in their gene pool. I understand if a person does not like or want them but most people do, and if you want too, the Spalding phenotype can be bred out of the birds. Just my way of thinking on this ... connerhills farm

Another comment on Javas,, Many, if not most, people can not state for sure that the birds they have are "pure" Javas. Most only know what they are told , I do not pose as an expert of Javas but I know of a lot of them that people think are good Javas, are Spaldings. I have seen a lot of photos over the years on the internet that state the birds are Javas. Some of the UPA forum and some on this forum.. There are no guide line or base line to work from. Some of the recent imports have not breed good in captivity. I would assume that the lines from Germany or Belgium are pure and so were the birds that Rodney Michael had but they dont all look alike. I have seen some high % Spalding that have a very good face color and crest shape with long legs but had a lot of barring on the wings and back. It would be best if breeders have a good place to start with greens and have some way to establish credibility of green breeders or this can go on for many years and people having the same questions and photos.. Keep in mind that they are 3 green species and when these are crossed that makes a high percentage green Spalding. This is not to be criticial of anyone but to bring up a subject to keep in mind and a goal to work toward to make a better green . Credibility of breeders, so people can be satisfied that they did indeed buy Java greens. again my thinking on this. connerhills

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever The pure greens will be gone in the USA the EXACT way people crossed golden x amhearst pheasants. Now we know what a red golden is supposed to" Look like" and we know what a lady amhearst is supposed to "look like" so where does that leave us. Same with these peafowl crosses. Sure there may be pure greens out there still and a few people that want to keep them that way (me included) but everyone is dreaming if you think its gonna stay that way. The deal is you are ALWAYS going to have people crossing everything for that "ultimate bird". And good ole farmer joe says " I dont know bout no Java.Burmese, spauldin or whatnot yall talkin bout but he's green aint he ?" So you can take it from there. You pretty much see the two ends of the spectrum. Connerhills are you saying that if you breed any of the three sub-species of green with each other you get a "spaulding"???? I ask this because I've always been under the assumption that a spaulding was a breeding between the India blue and java green ( although it could also be the other two sub-species, but alot harder to find here in the US) but so everyone understands a blue x green cross? Ill do my part while Im alive to "keep em pure" This is my opinion like the OP wanted to know. Yes superpeacockman I am deadset against breeding the blues with the greens. What I call a spaulding

Well I used the term "MUTT", Because they are a cross ,and do not breed true. Like a beagle dog crossed with poodle =mutt puppies. Barred rock chicken crossed with a White leghorn = mutt chicks.

I agree spalding are grand looking birds, but still mutts to me because they don't breed true. I call all cross breed dogs mutts also even though alot are better dog than pure breeds.....

So don't take the term "MUTT" as meaning worthless....just not pure breed.
