i dont want her on laying pellets because i dont want her laying an abnormal amount of eggs since chickens are only supposed to lay one or two every month.

You got lots of good answers already. :thumbsup

Laying pellets don't MAKE birds lay... for some it can even have the opposite effect and delay growth and development including the date they start to lay.

It has already been said... and accurately... the MAIN difference in ANY of the feeds... regardless of the marketing term used on the front of the bag... Is protein and calcium levels.

Growing birds need more protein and less calcium than a mature bird. Too little protein or too much calcium can actually INHIBIT growth.

What breed is your chick and how old now?

I like Purina flock raiser with 20% protein... oyster shell on the side for calcium as they approach laying age. This is a happy medium. I NEVER use layer... as quite simply, like you... it doesn't meet MY goals for my flock.

i do have one but she stays with me 24/7. ive shown her other chicks from my cousin's house but since she was raised on her own i dont think she likes other chicks very much ... she sees people as her flock now.

Normal hens lay every day until they assemble a clutch. A clutch of eggs is normally 15 or so cackle fruits. I think that it would be good if you could post a link to whatever or to whoever gave you the information about hens only laying one or two eggs per month. Human females may only produce one egg per month but a hen is not a human, nore is a human a hen.

Chick starter is maybe 90% the same as lay pellets. But I doubt that laying pellets will harm a baby chick regardless of what you have heard or been told. Try this, the next time that you go to the feed store look at the tags on the chicken feed and compare the lay pellets to the chick starter. You'll find that they are both mostly the same ingredients.
Baby food like strained peas, carrots, or spinach are at the end of the day still peas, carrots, and spinach.
It would be better to check the % of nutrients than the ingredient list. The layer feed will have more calcium and less protein. For the brand I use, the starter is 18% protein 3% fat 3% fiber; All-flock is 18% protein; Layer 16% protein 3% fat 8% fiber; and Meat Maker is 21% protein 3% fat 4% fiber.
I am thinking of going to an all-flock pellet and offering calcium on the side for my layers. It seems that even with layer feed, my chickens have been taking additional calcium as my oyster shell bowl needs filling again.

I'm confused... where are you located... and what breed is it that only lays 1 or 2 eggs per month.

Ovulation and periods are not the same thing. We are just trying to be helpful AND learn at the same time. ;)

Oh god honey, no... Eggs are not a chicken's "period." Eggs are, well, eggs, as in ovulation. Humans ovulate (typically) once per month, but chickens DO ovulate daily. Birds do not menstruate. It is 100% natural for them to lay every single day, or every other day, or every 3rd day depending on the chicken and other factors.

I liked my black sex link hens - they were a little bit pushy for my flock though. Very pretty birds. I had one that would untie my shoes every time I went into the coop to feed them.:gig Another one would tug on my pants leg until I put the feed down.
