Is Colloidial Silver safe for Chickens?

Distilled water is not water thats been boiled and cooled distilled water is exactly what it says water thats been evaporated though a still of any size and re condensed into pure H20 boiling water actually 🤔 increases the ppm of things like fluoride that wont boil off as well as other solids, good luck

You would have to ingest gallons for this to happen! I drink 2-3 oz at a time and I’m still “in the pink”. We have a friend who gave her hens colloidal silver and nothing bad happened to them. Just sayin’

I am a chemist, and have looked into "colloidal silver" products in the past. I am also a person who likes "natural" remedies.

I believe that colloidal silver claims are true, in general. The chemistry/science behind how it works make sense to me. Silver does kill bacteria. But the problem I have with colloidal silver products is the nature/size of the colloid particle is pretty uncontrollable.

The particles have to be very small to get into a virus. Larger particles CAN get into a bacterium. However, without ever knowing what I was getting, I would be leery about depending on this sort of thing. The only Quality Control that is measured is the total amount of silver in ppm - Parts Per Million. You have no way of knowing if you have "jillions of little tiny colloid particles" or "ONE BIG PARTICLE". (OK, that's an exaggeration, but you get the drift).

I have found some IONIC silver products that I have had fantastic personal results with. They are made by Peaceful Mountain, the line is Sinus Rescue, Throat Rescue, Stomach Rescue, and Cold Rescue. Sinus and Cold are the same except for dosage - Sinus is 30 ppm and Cold is 20 ppm. I think Throat is 40 ppm and it has some mint in it - it's a throat spray. Can't remember the Stomach one, never really needed to use that one. I used to fly a lot - if I used the Cold or Sinus nasal sprays on my trip, I would not get sick when I got home.

If I forgot them or didn't use them, I would stand about a 40-50% chance of getting sick after a plane trip.

The key with Ionic instead of colloidal products is that the INDIVIDUAL silver ions are available. Individual ions = small particles = capability to enter a virus - PERIOD. There is no question about how many might be clustered together, etc. and whether you are actually getting the benefit of the silver that is there. It's all "bioavailable"/active. So when you have 30 ppm ionic silver, you are GETTING 30 ppm silver. When you have 30 ppm colloidal silver, your viruses might not be seeing anything at all depending on particle size...

Hope my Chem 101 description made some sense.

The lab I used to work at is closing down. I know they have a small bottle of silver nitrate in the cabinet - I'm hoping I can mooch it from them before they turn out the lights...

Just realized I didn't answer the "original" question about it being SAFE. DISCLAIMER: I am not a vet, and I've never given silver products to a chicken, but I can't imagine anything about it that would be inherently UNSAFE. It's a "simple" thing, a basic metal/mineral, not like some of those complex interactions that can occur with different species (dogs can't eat chocolate or raisins, these things can kill them!) or with some poisonous plants. I would THINK it would be safe.
thanks :)

I had a chicken that just didn't act like the others. She had no symptoms of any kind. .. so I called my neighbour and a man that at any given time has 3000. Plus birds on his property. He's a breeder of many species of birds, and very well know in Alberta. I have purchased some of my chicks and geese from him so I trust him very much. He said give her Colloidal silver.. even directed me to the health store where he buy. So I did.. she perked up and didn't take long.
I can't remember the exact dose. I now have a chocolate Wyandotte Bantum who now has a virus. She's been on poly - tonine a complex for about a week. Her symptoms were watery eye.. bubbles coming out. Cough .. sneezing. Then I remembered what I was told. Colloidal silver. So now I've stopped the vitamins, and she will only get colloidal silver. I poured 60 ml's of distilled water (distilled is water that's been boiled and cooled).. for those that didn't know. And I gave her 1 ml or 1 cc of colloidal silver. Her only symptom now is the raspy sound.. she may never get over this I was told but I've treated other birds with other things wrong ( nerve damage) with success .. so this is a walk in the park. I have nothing to loose. And all to gain if she gets better. She eats great. Drinks great. Loves her eggs..cooked and grated. Just raspy.. she's my house chicken for the next few weeks, walks around like she owns the place. I walk behind and clean up. Loves looking in the mirrors and watching me. In one week I will let you guys know how she is..
I did try to call my neighbour but he's away in the USA..
I know this is an old one comment, but I hope do you see this? I a
Have a seven week old baby chick that broke her leg, between her hip and knee. The vet basically said there was nothing he could do besides, put her down or amputate her leg and neither of those are an option. So I've been searching high and low for some natural remedies. i'm happy, I stumbled across this feed! But i have a couple questions. Does it have to be distilled water & If so, why and why do you need to boil it?

You don’t have to boil it if you buy it distilled, which most grocery stores carry. You don’t want regular water since minerals/additives can interfere with the silver. If you buy colloidal silver, you could probably just put a drop or 2 in the chicks beak without diluting it.
