is corn as main ingredient good for chickens?

By the way happy new year every one...
I see we are back at the same old game of the "status quo agriculture folks" telling us to eat more corn!... Us humans and animals are fat enough..thank you... I sure do enjoy that first summer time ear of sweet corn and the corn we put up in the freezer... But I surly do not appreciate the "status quo agriculture folks" putting it in what? HALF of everything at the grocery store!!!!! All animal feed even if the animal is not designed to eat it..

Heck my holiday pickeled herring had corn syrup in it....

Sorry status quo folks, I really do not care if you have Doctorates degrees or what. IMO you were schooled by a broken system that is starting to rear its ugly head, making us one of the least healthy nations on earth, with animals contracting disease and e coli outbreaks at an increasing rate......

WHY WHY WhY. If the farmers didn't have corn or soy you would be paying $10.00 a doz for eggs.

ghulst,,,I disagree... It is just what "they" (Those that have the most to loose when the truth about corn and soy finally get out..) want you to believe

. I sell eggs at around $3.50 a dozen, only 10% corn in the mix NO soy.. Yep my feed is a little more expensive.. But I feel my organic birds are healthier, and I feel my eggs and meat are healthier too.. Yes I use a little organic GMO free corn because I think it is a wonderful grain....IN MODERATION!!!

Of course I can not prove anything....

BUT I will say I will put my eggs against any raised on corn and soy any day of the week... Yes I go out of my way to buy my milk from cows that have a 100% grass fed diet... WOW is it good tasting and good for you! Not to mention REAL grass fed beef. Beef that is NEVER fed grain only grasses.. The way God/nature intended it to be...
It is sad that most Americans have never even tasted the taste of real beef...

Me I am not going to argue my beliefs with the industrialists... I urge those of you that question what our agricultral system has become to vote with your pocket book... Buy local, buy only products that contain the ingredients YOU want in them... Some times it is more expensive, sometimes not! The cost will come down when more people demand change....

Now where did you see anyone say "use more corn"? This all started with the article by Pollan foisted as a definitive piece on the evils of corn. If you actually read the comments by some of us you will clearly see where we stated that feed too much corn was a bad thing

Getting back to the original question that was asked in this thread, I don't think that the question of whether corn as a main ingredient in chicken feed is good for chickens can be answered with a simple YES or NO.

NON-GMO corn is very healthy for a chicken to eat. Just as NON-GMO soybeans and NON-GMO wheat and NON-GMO other grains.

The real question we need to ask is: Is feeding our chichens Genetically Modified Food (GMO food, aka "frankenfood") good for them?

That answer is a overwhelming NO! Absolutely NOT!

The problem is that -- at this point, about 90% of our nation's corn supply IS GMO, and most of our soybeans and some of our wheat is as well.

And to make matters worse, the government should demand that food be labeled as when it contains genetically modified food, but because the mega-agricultural corporations have bought the USDA with "political donations" to legislators, and the land-grant agricultural colleges (and with that, your local agricultural extension service) by funding their "research,"-- well, the government steadfastly refuses to require such labeling.

They KNOW that most consumers would NOT purchase -- nor eat -- genetically modified foods if these foods were labeled as such, which is why they will not demand such labeling.

So when you buy a chicken feed mix that has corn in it, or soybean in it, chances are at least 90% (if not higher) that you are buying food for your chickens that has been genetically modified. Even some organic mixes still have GMO grains in them, since not all organic grain is GMO-free.

I'm doing my best to get away from pre-mixes because of this.

I'm also moving away from corn in my chickens diet, replacing it with things like grain sorghum that are nutritionally similar but are not GMO..

Barry,
I can not fully agree.. It is my personal opinion that too much of anything is not good, and we over use corn and non fermented soy in this country. Yes, I personally oppose GMO's on environmental and moral grounds. However at least with Soy I feel their is enough "question" surrounding the hormonal effects of non fermented soybeans that I try to avoid them whether GMO or not!

I've always heard that to be labeled "organic" in the United States the feed CANNOT have any GMO components.

ON- I can agree with everything you've stated.
