Is it ok for ducks to mate with brothers and sisters?

I don't allow my sibling ducks to breed... I sell/give away the boys, or trade for an unrelated male. I also wouldn't want to buy a dog who was bred by a pair of siblings, or a parent/child pair. ick. and yes, I understand it's a regular practice, i just don't approve.

Full brother to sister matings are rare in dog breeding. Half brother to half sister (such matings have given me my best producers), uncle to niece, aunt to nephew, parent to offspring are all matings that are utilized by serious breeders. Should such matings be made by everyone? Heck no. It takes a complete knowledge of the family involved. Random outcrosses frequently result in outstanding individuals that carry no producing ability. The greatest dog I ever owned was an outcross (based on performance). She never produced a pup that was worth competing with.

So with correct knowledge of the animals pedigree careful breeding like half brother to half sister should be ok due to the crossing over of the chromosomes in meiosis generating biological diversity. Right?

Bottom line is that linebreeding can be utilized to intensify "bad" characteristics just as readily as "good" characteristics. You have to know the potential for what is in there to express itself. How does that happen? By working with a family for an extended period of time. NYReds has worked with his family of dogs for 30 years. I have worked with my present family for slightly longer. There are some individuals that I would never consider mating together. Others are a natural fit. By the way, I do not raise dogs to sell.

I know curiosity killed the cat, but i was curious as to what you do raise them for?

I raise beagles for field trial competition. They trail rabbits by the scent that they leave in a simulated hunting scenario. Nothing is shot or injured. Dogs are evaluated on their ability to accurately follow the scent trail of the wild rabbit. Kind of oversimplified, but that's what I do. (And have done for the last 51 years.

So you let your dogs breed there brothers and sisters?

I think you probably mean THEIR brothers & sisters. English is such a confusing language.
I don't think I said I let my dogs breed THEIR brothers & sisters so I'm not sure where you got that notion. What I did say is I line breed both poultry & dogs. Do as I suggested, search for line breeding as I really have neither the time nor the inclination to try to explain it to you. Maybe if you actually did do some basic research into animal breeding it would prevent you from giving more bad advice based on uninformed opinion.
