My 7 month old barred rock hen layed a giant egg today. What causes that and is it unhealthy? My 10 hens typically get along well, but this morning she was on a rampage picking at the others, then she went in the coop and pushed out this giant egg!

That is huge! No wonder she was cranky! For a pullet that haven't been laying long, large eggs, tiny eggs, eggs with two/three yolks, eggs with no yolks, eggs without a shell, etc. are common. Soon she'll get the system figured out, and eggs like this will become less common if seen at all.

I have gotten 3 super jumbo eggs over 77 grams, from my 38 week old pullets. 81 to 95 grams, 3.35 ounces. Over 50 dozen have been between small, when they started to lay, to mostly XL and jumbo presently. I don't think it's unhealthy, but I wouldn't want to be the one to lay it. OUCH. GC

Welcome to BYC!

Curious.....
How long has she been laying?
If she laid an egg the day before?
......and what's in there.... double/triple yolks....shelled egg within a shelled egg???

I was just about to ask just that. The only time any of my chicks layed anything that large that is exactly what it turned out to be: A 'Chinese nesting-box' egg pair.
