Some people seem to have paid upwards of $5k per bird for chocolate Orpingtons exported from the UK to the US. Was it worth it? To them, it obviously was, or they wouldn't have done it. Other people probably think they're insane. Each to their own...

Maybe, just MAYBE, you could ask your local farm store about their next order of chicks - the one I use orders chix just about every week. If they're ordering, maybe you can ask them to order what you want, and call you when they arrive. Wouldn't this be an ideal situation? It wouldn't be a risk for them - if you didn't turn up to pick them up, they'd sell them anyway!! and they have to order a certain number of chix, probably more than you want to order - and shipping is a lot, too.
