One of my leghorn used to lay double-yolk eggs, ooh, they are so skinny and I always feel empathy when she sings her egg song after thatThey are such skinny chickens compared to my others, I'm always amazed at the size of their eggs. I will check her vent once I can get her out of there without losing a finger
Time to set up a breaker cage, since you mentioned not wanting chicks at this time.She slept in the nesting box last night. She did come out when I opened the coop this morning and drank water like crazy, ate a little bit, and then went back in. I think I may officially have a broody leghorn.
After talking with my husband about it and making sure we had another pen set up for her just in case, we decided to let her hatch 4 eggs. 1 was not fertile, but she did a great job hatching the other 3! I was worried she wouldn't stay on the nest but she did a fantastic job and is now quite the happy mama taking care of her babies. So far she has been a great protector as well and they are doing fine with the rest of the flock.
