I think it's still in there, but you may want to try and get him on something to fight off infection. He could have it pretty injured. He may never have use again of it, but at least heal it up.

I'd try saline. As someone mentioned previously, you don't know if it's scratched so you should be careful what you put in it. You can probably find saline eye wash at the drug store. If you make it, you have to be careful to use distilled water and sterilize it. I made it for a horse of mine once but can't remember the proportions of salt to water.

That boy looks pretty smart...Maybe he's just trying to make you feel guilty for being gone? JK!! LOL
