Is there a chance I could get two females in a straight run?

Its really luck of the draw and the more you get the closer to 50/50 you will be. With just getting 2 it will be really hard to guess could go either way or one of each really, and my luck they will both be cockerels lol.
Generally if I get straight run chicks I get at least 50 and usually end up pretty close to 25 of each

I would think that the odds of 2 SR birds being pullets are about as good as the chances of winning the lottery.

I wish!

I ordered 3 straight run splash Ameraucanas, because they were not offered sexed. And I got 3 out of 3 pullets.

When I went to pick up the chicks I added 3 buff cochin bantams, same thing, only offered straight run.... and ended with 3 out to 3 pullets!

You'll get no argument from me that I beat the odds with those 6 birds! Now I'm just waiting to win the lotto:fl ... so I can blow it all on more chickens :yesss:

IMO, the odds of success (getting pullets) are greatly decreased if you order SR of a breed which is also sold sexed. IMO, a lot of cockrels are tossed into the SR bin ...

I agree, and would always pay a little more to get sexed pullets when they are offered, just because of what you mention here, I feel like the odds get stacked against you in these cases.

:eek:whoa! Is there a reason for that number for silkies?

I'm used to seeing maybe $1 more max per bird for sexed pullets vs straight run. But I've never priced silkies.
You can't get sexed day old silkie chicks, or any specific sexed bantams, anywhere else.

Cackle is the only other to offer some sexed bantams but in an assortment of just 9 breeds.

So they're just asking 12x more for that service just because no one else offers it, and they can get it? I'm not holding that against them, if the market will pay it, ask it ... as far as I'm concerned. It just really surprised me to see that number.

Just for clarification ( I had to look it up, because I thought I remembered some being offered as sexed) ...Cackle does offer some specific varieties of bantams sexed, barred rock bantams, Dominique bantams, RIR bantams... maybe some others...

Bottom line, if you can't/don't want roos, have a plan to dispose of them, or don't get straight run. Don't trust to luck that you will get girls. Know that unwanted roos are a dime a dozen, and hard to rehome. You will be better off looking for adult silkie hens, even if you have to wait and pay more for them.

'Straight Run' are mostly always roosters if you ask me, because a lot of folks just want hens so the ones that are sexed as roosters are always abundant, so they just toss it back into the straight run to sell..... that's my take on it anyway.
