Is there more than one egg scale design?

I'll add my weight (ha ha) to the kitchen scale. It didn't take me long to memorize the cut-offs for each size grade and it's quite simple to just pop them on, peek at the number and know right where you are.

Early on, when the eggs were small, we used the scale to weight out amounts for recipes as well (it was Christmas time, we were doing a lot of stuff that called for 12 large eggs).

I didn't put anything on mine either until an egg went rolling! Caught it before it hit the tile floor, so now I usually put something on the top, a paper towel or a pot holder. I turn it on and then put the egg on. Mine has a metal platform and it's smooth without a raised edge. Like you, I have memorized the weight=size so this works great. Can't remember where I got mine, but I've had it for probably 3 or 4 years and it's been very reliable. Plus it has it's own little spot on the counter top so it's always handy.

just to update this thread. First, the original "Jiffy" style scale actually is back in production HOWEVER, it is a "reproduction" (complete with fake aging) coming out of India.

Secondly, there are a couple very nice digital dedicated egg scales being sold by some of the online poultry product sellers.

If you are looking for a functional vintage scale (like the Mascot I have) I suggest you do your homework to avoid paying high prices for a knock-off. I already mentioned the "Jiffy" style but there are also "reproduction" Oakes style scales coming out of India as well tho these are so cheaply made they are pretty easy to spot.

BTW-I totally agree on the new Jiffy scale being stupid ugly. That is what led me to learning about the other scales out there in the first place. Unfortunately, I am now a hooked collector.
