Is there something wrong with my duck's wings? (pictures)

Dear Alicia,
It is defenately Angel wing. If your duckling was younger say a coupleweeks old, it would be blood feathers being too heavy and the feathers would protrude outward. But, your duck looks much older than that and I can see the feathers sticking way out....It looks like it has taken over both wings. the left wing is more prominent and that is normal in Angel Wing. The cause of this desease is too much protein in the diet. If you are giving the duck a 18% protein feed, you need to drop that to 14% of protein and give the duck fresh grass,,,peas are my ducks favorite and lettuce if they will eat it. Romain Lettuce is best because ice-berg letuce has very little nutrients. (mostly water). Buy some Micropore Medical Tape and tape the wings flat to their body. Not too tight tho- wrap the tape completely around the body 2 or 3 times around. Leave this on for about a week and then remove it. Your duck will not like this and will seem to be confused at first. If he stumbles around it is ok as he will get the hang of it in a few day's. you should be able to slide your pinky feather between the tape and the body. If you do this, you will have a normal duck in a week. Good Luck....keep us up to date.....RM

....correction, pinky finger between the tape and body. Keep water and food close to the duck and you should by all means seperate your duck from the others while you nurse him. The other ducks or chickens WILL start pecking the feathers of your duckling and this is not a good thing...

Will it have any long term effect on him if he can't get rid of it?
Yeah ill try it, he just always gets into the dog food when he comes inside.

Alicia, If you do the tape thing, I'am 99% sure you will correct the problem. I would do it ASAP. dont wait too long because their feathers grow fast and if you wait, it may be too late. If the Angel Wing dosn't get better, No it wont hurt the duck but he will look abnormal. And PLEASE keep the duck out of the dog food....LOTS of protein in the dog food and thats what your Duck DOSEN'T need right now.............RM

While protein gets the blame, I am sure it is the carbohydrates that are actually the issue. Is the first ingredient in that dog food CORN by chance?

Either way, give that duck a salad!!!

I will try to do that. He was just raised spoiled so he is very hard to please now. I love him a lot and only try what's best, I'm glad I figured it out wen I did.

My ducks are spoiled too. Fortunately they think peas and other greens are "candy". (Please don't tell them any different, ok?)

Its definitely Angel Wing. I have a call duck that I was given with it. I'm going to take corrective measures tomorrow. The younger you try to take care of it the better the success rate.

Good luck!

Laurie
