Is there such a thing as a Barred rocks that is solid black ?

If they are black, then they are not barred rocks. Barred is the color, just like black, white, buff, etc. As someone already said, the breed is Plymouth Rock. Barred or Black would be the color of the variety of Plymouth Rock.

So .. let me rephrase my question.
Presuming the black pair were produced from BR's, since they came with a shipment of BR's, would they be split for BR's or breed true for black rock?

I doubt it they even came from barred rocks. the hatchery barred rocks have more of a cuckoo pattern than anything.........

I don't think barring "hides". If you have a solid colored bird, it won't throw a baby if bred to another solid bird. I think if barring is present it always expresses, even if only partially. Is that what you were asking?

If they came from barred rocks, they would be barred. If the rooster is barred, all babies will have barring of some sort. If just the hens are barred, their boys will have barring and the girls wont, if bred along sexlink lines. So either way, the rooster would be barred. I just dont think thats a rock; an Australorp makes more sense. I dont believe barring "hides". If they carry the barring gene, it will be expressed, in one form or another.

With your chicks, the black chick is probably a girl, and the barred chicks probably boys.

Yep - it sounds as if someone grabbed the wrong black chicks when package your order and you now have 2 Australorps with your Barred Rocks -- if you have any pics of when they were babies, you should be able to tell the difference.

Barred Rock chicks have a definite black spot on their heads (all of them do)

Black Australorps look more like little penguins - mine had yellow and white tummies and faces (no black spots on the backs of their heads). the only pics I have of my australorp babies are with their adoptive Barnevelder mom - the australorps are the black and white/yellow chicks in these pics:

Hey thanks for the great pictures. I have been trying to look at the bottoms of my roosters feet all day but the ground is dirty so his feet are dirty. I thought I could tell if he was a jersey giant vs an austrolop. His feet are so black it is hard to see any color under there.
Anyway the baby chicks he has produced 2/3 of them are just like the ones in your pictures, but then there are the other 1/3 that are stripey just like the barred rock pattern so he is producing some barred rock coloring.
It is fun just seeing what comes of it all anyway.

barred is the variety of the Rock. I agree that the blacks are Australorps, what happened is that both of these varieties(black and Barred) are breeding "true". This happens with my langshans, I can breed a black cock to a white hen and get some of each color. So the offspring and Rock Australorp crosses, should be good dual purpose birds, just with either color showing some dominance
