Is there such thing as a "nice" roo

i have mostly bantam boys in my flock. only a mixed marans x faverolles boy is my LF i am thinking of keeping since he is sweet and will jump into my lap for petting and treats. but my favs and cochins i have had little issues with. a wing dance on occasion and a slight nip if i am feeding treats and they don't get to check it over first to be sure it is safe!

i do not tolerate aggressive roos for long. i have tried the 'rooster reform' stuff on a few with mixed results. those breeds that are normally not aggressive i usually don't have many issues with having to reform them for long. they just get used to me being bigger and handling everyone and realize i am not the threat, i am usually the food/treat bringer!

now, mixed breeds can sometimes be issues if i have been unsure of what the mix entailed! dh will not tolerate aggressive roos attacking me and i will not rehome a roo like that just out of safety to others. bigger, older roos will sometimes put younger, more hen/human aggressive roos in their places quickly

Personally, I beleive that there are alot more mean roos than nice ones, but I have been blessed with a EE whos kind of a sweetheart. He is ok with being handled but he doesnt like people that much. He hasnt attacked us so far.

I notice that a lot of people with nice roos have said they are ee's. Ours ee is the sweetest roo in the world! He almost lost his life, and did lose his tail, in a recent dog attack. But he saved his hens!

I have 5 rir and 3 barred rocks...3 of the rir are roosters (that was our luck in a straight run). I raised them from chicks- picked them up, pet them everyday (yes, everyday). They are now 5 months old and i have never had a problem with them yet...never once hurt the others or were aggressive to me. They are still very protective and alert whenever a car comes or a stranger comes by but have never attacked anyone, have even chased away stray cats. I have heard so much about bad roos and i really think that its how they are raised. For example, the 3 barred rock hens came from craigslist at around 2 months of age and they had an attitude...it took the past 2 months to get them comfortable with being pet. I know 3 roos are too many for a flock that small but I don't think that i could bring myself to kill any of them bc of how great they have been. They love me.

Funny I should read this just now.

I was just out with my adult flock and was talking to my dark brahma roo, Thor. Now everyone on BYC knows that I adore this roo. Anyhow, what I was telling him is that I knew he would get more handsome with age, but I didn't realize he would also get more mellow. He's always been a good roo, now it seems he's trying for perfect status.

Love this boy!

Thanks. That's not really a great pic of him though, because his white feathers were showing the "bronzing" they get from the summertime sun.
He has iridescent green and purple in his wing and tail feathers that I've just never been able to capture with a camera.

I have a Partridge Rock roo that is going into his 4th year here and he has been nothing but nice. Very gentle with the ladies and gives me walking room. His spurs are extremely long, though I've trimmed them once. He is both beautiful and sweet.
