Is this a breast bone sticking out or a growth?

DE DOES kill fleas in huge quantities, I haven't seen that small and safe amounts dent their numbers any, when I say huge quantities, I mean, a jar of DE that I throw the fleas in to shake-n-bake themselves... They do eventually die... but, just sifting some around and even putting it ON the animals didn't dent the population at all.

I would use DE as a deterant, such as putting it in a turkey baster and blasting it into cracks between boards and maybe right around the base of the coup, but only a fine line, something that maybe the bugs would rather not cross. I also use it in my dogs kennel some, I put it on the concrete in a very fine layer and then pile about 4-6 inches of pine shavings on top. Very little if any gets airborn that way but it keeps the bottom layer of the shavings dry and keeps the concrete from getting saturated in urine when he pees in the shavings. As for actual pest control once you get an infestation, I wouldn't rely on it, but it may help prevent a bit if used properly (which most people don't do) and only use it where it won't go airborn and it creates a barrier rather than being on EVERY surface.

Well Esmeralda is still alive and at times she shows a slight improvement and other times no. She is shaking her head more today, which I know is a sign of worms. I gave her a dose of Valbazen on Tuesday and I'm planning on the second dose of Friday, if she makes it. Do you think I should try another dose today or is that too much?

If you are treating for gapeworms you are supposed to give Valbazen three days in a row.

I know the birds in the other coop have round worms so I thought she did too. She doesn't cough, stretch her neck, or gasp for air, but she is shaking her head a lot. Would that be gapeworm and if so...what should I do when Valbazen was given 4 days ago?

I don't know, I've only ever seen gapes once, and my hen could barely breathe.

If you want to treat for gapes give it threes days in a row. How much does she weigh?

this looks like TB to me and sounds like it (lame walking). if a chook has an exposed sternum and no breast muscle on either side it's TB. sometimes this comes through on a chook's DNA so it can have an exposed sternum but with some breast muscle which atrophies when the bird's immune is compromised (like most other illnesses). if you are near a place that sells homeopathic remedies try TB 200C - couple drops on the beak per week. then try higher if chronic TB 1M. there's a really good homeopathy site for poultry that was written by an Indian in the 19th century (i think). it's brilliant. giving birds, or anything natural, is compromising the immune system. Feed your birds raw, organic plant-based food only for them to live til 30 or more. i get eggs all year round and mine were all rescued from diseased areas. sadly, i do have some on-going problems with some of them because they came to me later in their lives. ensure your birds get lots of charcoal filtered rainwater and i also have some salt from nepal which i use every now and again in the rain water to keep up their mineral levels. good luck...
