Is This A Lilac??? (Added New Pics!)

Yes and the branches show red in the winter. They are wild around here--I have to keep grubbing them out of flower beds. The produce white berries that the birds love so spread the seeds all over. They prefer moist areas and once established spread to form thickets by tipping in and underground roots--PIA when they get in where you don't want them.

That's interesting. There must be a ton of dogwood specimens. I have on that has a red twig but it's foilage doesn't turn red. And yes, my goodness they seem to be prolific.

See, this goes back to my title about LILACS. To me, it looks like a lilac bush! I even walked down to the farm next door where they have lilacs and looked, and they look just like mine! The leaves do vary from breed to breed. They don't match my closer neighbor's lilac leaves but they DO look like the farm's lilac leaves. I don't know if a lilac could grow that fast, but it is very possible I didn't see it last year. I'm still discovering a lot of plants here that I don't remember seeing last year. Also, there are berry bushes planted right there and last year they were very prolific and may have concealed or even overwhelmed the plant, so it's likely I didn't see it. This year, with all the rain and no sun, the berries aren't doing as good, so I can see that plant better.

You have a good theory also, about chopping down overgrowth. This property was for sale for some time, and when I first looked at it, I do remember that lots of things had been cut back, including some tree branches around the deck.

It's kind of funny that I asked "Is this a lilac?" and I'm getting all kinds of suggestions that I KNOW it is not. Perhaps it really is a lilac. I hope so actually, I love lilacs and think that would be a nice spot for them, adding to privacy at the deck area. Although I could see how it could potentially overtake the deck too.

LauraJean, if that is a lilac it is going to be way too close to your house unless you want to constantly prune it. They not only get to 8 - 10 feet but spread through suckers.

Well it actually depends on the type, because I've had small lilac dwarf shrubs, although it's probably not likely that it's one of those. But it's no big deal to move it. I guess I'll wait until I am sure what it is, so that I can put it in an ideal spot.

So, all of my books are subtropical or tropical. The furthest I go is the Carolina's and that book was a tree key.

One day I might see a lilac, or snow, or something besides the same county, but Unlikely at the rate I am moving.
Sorry I couldn't help. Maple's idea of it being a root sprout from something someone hacked out sounds very plausible, which means it will be a serious die hard.

...sounds like a good mascot plant for you.

Not a forsythia. Mine have toothed leaves and bloomed a month ago. It does remind me of some vines that are very invasive in my yard. They die back in the winter, but when they start in the spring they look like that and then really go wild. Repost in a couple of weeks and let us know what flowers, berries, etc. it is developing. Or, pull it up now before it takes over LOL!

Ok, here are the pictures that I promised-

I planted this wild bush about 6 years ago.

I definitely know that this bush is NOT a lilac, I have common lilacs around my house, so I know the different between those bushes.

There are many more varieties of Lilacs then just the ones shown, as I said, if she waits til spring, she will know for sure!
