Is This a Pip?

Pics
I'm almost positive that that hole is on the wrong side of the egg... Which means he might not be able to get out on his own.
I didn't really check that long, I just looked for whether they were developed enough and left it at that. The pic I took was at an angle where I was facing the small side of the egg more, he's seems to be more in the middle. Do you want more pictures and should I take a look at the other eggs now? Or should I wait for this one? If it comes down to me helping him out, what do I need to do?

I wouldn't be able to stand not knowing what is going on in the eggs RIGHT NOW...so I would grab them each and take a peek.
STEADY....I would keep the egg in the EXACT position it is in right now and move the light around it and see what I could see.

I would NOT rotate the egg or flip it while candling.

You should probably just leave them alone and wait and see what happens.

He definitely pipped the wrong end of the egg. Never had one do that before, that I've noticed anyway. I can't see every egg when it hatches...

Did you set the eggs in the holder pointy side up or down? Or did you lay them on their side and rotate by hand?

The membrane looks to be dark, brown colored. That is a typical sign of a dry membrane. Usually they are white. But he looks like he's continually making his hole a little bigger so that is good. Hopefully he will zip soon and is not shrink wrapped.... :fl.

If he was my last chick to hatch I would assist him in opening the shell. Usually the last chicks that hatch for me are one's that have dried membranes. But he is your first so I don't know. Hopefully he will do his thing.

I'll keep checking tonight and if by tomorrow morning nothing seems changed, I'll consider trying to help him. He does seem to have gotten the hole a bit bigger though. They were on their side and I rotated them by hand.

IF you open him up in the morning you should immediately know if he was shrink wrapped or not. The membrane will be darker colored and stuck to him in places. I try and remove the top off the egg like if he zipped. Also I try not to pull him all the way out in case he has not absorbed all of his yolk and so he doesn't bleed a lot.

There is an assisted hatching thread on here that a lot of people recommend, I've never read it. Just looked and there's a TON of info in it and it's probably way too much to try and digest at once. Here's the link. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching.64660/

Hopefully he'll get out on his own tonight but it looks kind of iffy.... good luck

Thanks. Humidity is at 45% now

@mdees88 @Kiki I'm getting a little nervous, should I try widening the pip tonight instead of tomorrow? He hasn't been able to zip, he just moves his beak back and forth in the spot.

If it were pipped normally, I would say no, but in this case, I would. Be prepared for it to have problems, though. I might not make it even with help.

It's up to you. If he hatches out on his own he will likely be a strong healthy chick. If you help him out the chances of him not thriving increase greatly. Probably half the chicks I help hatch out don't thrive and end up getting culled within a day or two. The other half do fine.

Considering the relatively low humidity during lockdown, he's the only chick that has pipped, the fact that he pipped at the wrong end, and since it's been over 24 hours since he pipped, I would open the top of the shell up and see if he's shrink wrapped.....

I have a feeling he is and that's just what I would do but I'm definitely not an expert, especially with the Gambel's. I would cut, tear, crack, whatever the shell in a circle almost all the way around and pop it open and fold it back. I guess you could just cut the top completely off too.

If you want to let him try and do it on his own tonight that's fine. I've had some take over 24 hours to zip. But if he has not zipped by in the morning I would most definitely help him out and you can expect him to have some issues.

I would say no because I am a firm believer in if they can't hatch themselves then they aren't meant to be but....
I know how hard it is to not do something.

Have you candled this one yet?
