How can you tell?

On which one - or all of them? The first two you can see male saddle and hackle feathers - as well as a pretty typical male pattern on the second bird. On the silkie - I'm not so good with silkies but believe I see streamers on the head.

I think male silkies have the prominent comb. Whoever sold them as "hens" obviously lied. they just wanted to dump some roos and get some money

Very typical with auction purchases. I'd say don't frequent auctions unless you've got a good eye for gender, and are willing to risk disease in your flock.

That black copper marans looks really nice all in black. If i had him i would breed him with some dark copper maran hens and try to make some black marans. they're kinda rare.
