I have read recent BYC messages from various Muscovy Duck owners saying that Muscovies are going to become illegal own. Is this going become into law soon? Also is this going to be a national law or just specific areas of the of the country? Please send me more information about this and send me a link is there is one. How and why can the government have the right to ban a specific type of duck that we as poultry enthusiasts that love having them around. It is like banning Pit Bulls and other supposedly 'aggressive' breeds from communities and cities, which I am totally against in the first place, but Muscovy Ducks? If this is true, I will make a facebook page saying Don't Ban Muscovy Ducks!!

It is true - it's because so many Muscovy ducks have flown away and formed wild populations that they're now considered an invasive species.

I'm a Natural Resources major, so that's all I know. Hopefully someone else will drop in who can give you more information.

How in the world do they regulate that?
I can guarantee the dummies in my town hall wouldn't even be able to identify one.
That's a real shame they're doing this. What's next??

Or maybe they will K I C K it for you! We are talking FEDS here, not only your stupid locals. I agree it is a poor dumb rule that they may choose to ignore. It passed because of places like the state of FL which is pretty much a Eco-nightmare. they think they can control flying muscovies when they can't control chickens on Key West! "Approximately 26% of all fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals in South Florida are exotic" The big 3 animals are hogs, cats, and rats. Reptiles include such nice things as Burmese Pythons, Green Iguanas, and Nile Monitors. Other birds include monk parrot. myna birds, & Purple swamp hens.
FL (with other states and urban areas) begged for help with their Muscovies, birds excaping, and being dumped in parks etc. The Federal rule which goes into effect March 31, 2010 was the result. The biggest problem is that the animal rights groups have grapped on to this rule and are going to insist that it be enforced. It is going to be hard for law enforcement to ignore this stupid rule with the animal rights groups insisting it be enforced. Birds born before 3/31/10 will be grandfathered in so be prepared to prove you had your birds before then. Otherwise keep a low profile, law enforcement is unlikely to go looking for trouble unless animal rights force them to act.

Ducks are invasive huh? Wow!
What about the snakes in the Florida keys. They are destroying the entire ecosystem. But they are still allowing the sale, importation and breeding of them. What's wrong with that?

I think you mean the Everglades with your snakes and are you aware that there is now a $100/year permit required and they must be microchipped?

I am aware of the registration fee and the microchip also. They were just showing the other night on National geo. that they have migrated to the keys aswell/ They are crossing the bridges made for cars. They showed how when the snakes come to an obstacle they just crawl along it and end up following the concrete barriers right across the bridge.
They are a top predator that eats everything they can fit in there mouth. But they are not stopping the sale of them. These snakes and lizards too have the ability to completely ruin an ecosystem. I doubt that ducks can cause the same damage and if they do it would be isolated.

Yes, I live here in South Florida, and they have been battling this issue for years. I mean, come on, give me a brake!

These birds have been here since before the Indians for crying out loud! I myself, just love seeing those sweet Muscovies. I know, I know, they are competing with the native species, our Wood Ducks and such. What are you supposed to do, I mean really? I don't believe in killing them, just the thought makes me sick. Like I said, they were here before us, leave them alone. Just my opinion.
