Is this bumblefoot?

Some of my birds have mild cases of bumblefoot and I've just left it. They don't have trouble walking or seem to be in pain. No point in surgery unless they really need it.

There is some info on Bumblefoot on the Poultry Podiatry page on my website linked in my sig below.

This looks like the callous form of Bumblefoot to me. I'm thinking this one just needs gentle lifting of the edges of the sore & careful trimming off of the connecting root underneath with small fingernail scissors, fingernail clippers or wire cutters.

Softening the sore first might be unnecessary, but might help in making it easier & less likely to cause damage. You could do this by soaking in warm water a few minutes, or possibly by putting Vaseline or Neosporin on it every so often a couple hours before you want to do the removal.

After cutting out, put a little Neosporin or generic triple antibiotic ointment (Choose one that DOES NOT have pain reliever in it) in the hole that is left & things should heal fine.

Be sure to check that all your perches are set up appropriately so chances for future problems are minimized. I will soon be adding a webpage about recommendations for perches on my site. You could check there in a few days for ideas.

Nope..It's caused by walking on rough surfaces-or splinters from roosting bars and such. they need to get a break in skin for it to occur:( But, I suppose maybe having wet feet can cause the skin to be more
pliable and easier to tear??

Thanks so much for all the replies...we did minor surgery on her foot...wrapped it in vet wrap...it was not bad, I did not get pics, I needed a third hand for that!

It was tiny in comparison to some of the pics I saw posted here...no real "root" on it...so I hope we took care of it for her sake, she is my best layer!

we will change out the wrap daily and see how she heals...thanks again! Great threads, I will be book marking them all!

this is what I read also...uneven surfaces on roosts...

Callous-type Bumblefoot caused by perches happens mostly when the skin on the chicken's feet gets a lot of rubbing from trying to grip slick perches, such as a too-round, too-thin, or too-slippery ones. Roosts with textured surfaces, such as thick tree branches with bark on them, are actually excellent for chickens, from my observations & things I've read. Chickens feet are reasonably scratch and puncture resistant, unless there is pretty strong pressure (such as from landing) against something sharp. Really splintery perches could be bad, though.

Hello Fellow Chicken Lovers!!
I am a fairly new chicken owner & my RiR rooster has bumble foot! Can anyone suggest the best antibiotics to deal with it? And can I get it at a feed store or do I need to go to a vet? He has lost some weight so I am really getting worried about him! Thank you all so much!

I healed 3 of my chickens bumblefoot without any surgery! I have always believed in healing from the inside out and this proved to work with chickens as well. One of my girls even had a bumble dime sized and swollen on her foot. Here is what I did for about 10 days:

I have a puddle that forms on my patio when sprayed down each morning. I sprayed it then added about 8 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract and some Spice of Life oil blend from Be Young essential oils, about 8 drops. I then swirled it around a bit then sprinkled some food in the water. The chickens would come and stand in the water for several minutes, drink the water and eat the food with the oils on it. The extract and oils are known to kill strep and other bacteria. Their scabs became lighter and lighter and the swelling went down in a few weeks. I just looked today and there is not any sign of ever having bumblefoot! Perfectly clean. Amazing! It took a couple months for it to totally be gone but I only did the oils for 10 days then left it alone. I couldn't believe my eyes when I checked them today. No more surgery around here!
