Is this Immature of me or is this acceptable? Long but please read

sorry I did not read all the responses, but I think you are on the wrong side. why, if you voice your willingness to shoot your neighbors dog over your chickens, then you are not being a good neighbor ( thats pretty hostile) that in it self is asking for hostility. my neighbors dog has already attacked my chickens once, instead of getting mad i compromised. my neighbor has been better at keeping dog on leash but i still have to worry about wild animals and other dogs that are around and not leashed. so I cannot get mad about the one dog if I have to worry about other stray dogs. you should have your chickens safe from all predictors wild or domestic. I am a strong believer at keeping the peace with all neighbors despite the hand dealt to you is more important than keeping a few chickens alive. now if my neighbors dog killed one of my chickens, thats my fault not theirs. if your chickens are that important then you should keep them safe. my neighbors told me if their dogs kill one or more of my chickens then they would replace them. now that does not cover the value of raising a chick from birth and all the hassles of raising chicks/chickens. but its all they can do. chickens are endangered from all types of preditors so don't let your hobby make problems between your neighbors.

regardless, if someone threatened to shoot my dog i would automatically get on the defensive ( as your neighbors ). I understand your side, but if you leave a note about shooting a family pet, thats bad, and makes you look like the bad guy. all I know is my chickens could get in their yard and do damage as well as their dog could in mine, so just protect your chickens.
if I where you I would appologize to your neighbor and work something out, even if they are in the wrong, be the better person and make a compromise.
now that said my chickens are illegal, and i have no choice but to be nice about it, but I think i would if they where legal. its just good policy.

I wouldn't put anything in writing. It could come back to haunt you. Go to the police department and arrange for a police officer to accompany you and your mom to the neighbors house and tell the neighbor that you will shoot his dog if it is found on your property chasing, harassing etc your chickens. You have a right and obligation to protect your property.

PLEASE be careful. People can be nuts and retaliate in many different ways. Good luck.

To be honest I don't think their garden has much time left anyways. My little boy is potty training and my husband told him if he has to pee just go along the fence. I think it's a bit of a game for him to see just how far he can make it go

I agree, cover your butt and I would let the cops know your neighbor is trespassing (with pics) to protect yourself

again Yes I would be mad too, but if you can't protect your chickens from a local dog than you are still not safe from raccoons, opossums and what not. they should keep their chickens safe. if my neighbors dog broke thru my run or coop then i would make it safer. I am sorry to be the devils advocate. but shooting your neighbors dog is a bad idea, legal and moral. some people think pets are like family, so if my neighbors child was killing my chickens i would not kill their child in response, i would child proof it. I look at it like this. if I put chicken sald on the porch table, i can not be surprised if flies take to it, if i don't want flies on my food then i must protect it. having chickens in your yard its like putting chicken salad on your porch table, it going to attrack flies regardless unless you protect yourself. (flies meaning dogs and other preditors).

Sorry, but who cares about being neighborly? Nikki's neighbors aren't very neighborly to begin with from the sounds of it.

BirdBrain2, I don't think thats going to work in Nikki's position. Yes, I'm sure they might be a hobby, but they are probably also pets. I know for a fact that Nikki has put a lot of time into her quail, and to have a dog kill them because someone let it run around would be an awful thing. She is allowed to have her animals anyway she wants them, whether free ranging or not, as long as they are on her property. If the neighbor's dog gets off they aren't doing their part because they dog should stay on their property.

yes but how is a neighbors dog any different than a raccoon or hawk?
if it was a raccoon than this would not be an issue. but yet still have the same problem. i am sure their neighbors dog is keeping coons away. like I said i feel for monarc23, and understand their frustration. but you must protect your chickens.

where I live i have every possible risk of preditors that you can have. so if my chickensare not safe from the wild then they have no chance with local dogs or coyotes.
