Is This Impacted Crop? *UPDATE* She's Gone.....

Wow, nice detective work Specks. It would be interesting to see if you don't get any more problems since you fenced off the area.

How is Ivy now?

Question: Is Ivy a BR? Are these type of birds more prone to getting crop problems? Another one: Once something like this gets fixed, are they more apt to get it again? I still can't figure out why Gertie has this problem.

BTW - thank you for holding my hand thru all this.

Yes, Ivy is a Barred Rock. I'm not sure any breed is more prone to these problems than others. Sure hope not! Ivy is with the flock today. Her crop is quite small, though it feels more gassy than just empty. What worries me is that she hasn't laid in a week and was in a nest more than once today. I hope she doesn't have another issue going on here and was just hiding from Dutch. I'm tired of problems this year.

And I'm just trying to lend support where I can, no biggie. I hope Gertie does recover and both she and Ivy live very long lives.

Well, Gertie hasn't laid any eggs in a week. I was thinking the same thing wondering if she was eggbound and impacted crop at the same time. Is that even possible?

I wish I were home right now, I don't like being here at work worrying and not being able to check on her. when I do get home and I don't feel that she is getting any better I'm taking her to the vet, hopefully they have someone there that does birds.

I'm hoping that's all it is too. Gertie ate a little yogurt and pureed grapes, about a good tablespoon of it. She also ate some soft scrambled eggs, maybe around the same amount as the yogurt. I'm hoping this keeps her going - she can't see the vet til Wed morning

She seems to be getting weaker tho, and when I went to massage her crop I felt another weird lump and panicked, but as I kept feeling I realized it was her scrawny neck I was feeling  I'm starting to feel all kinds of bones. I just hopes she hangs in there til Wed morning.

Her poops looks the same, watery with green little chunks, If she's pooping - somethings going through, right?

Well, not much is getting through. The green poop is from her lack of food, basically. I know what you're saying, that if there is anything coming out the back, something is getting through from the front. Yes,what you're feeling is her neck bones.

She is very weak this morning.

She's not eating anything, but last night I gave her pureed tomato with olive oil and she gobble it all up, so this morning she did a lot of poop, which seemed promising.

I never thought I'd be so happy to see all the poop.

I took her to the vet this morning - he's keeping her for now, the x-ray showed some stuff still in her crop, but not bad, Doc said he didn't like the way her kidneys looked and he was concerned about her breathing and the lungs. Ugh. She's all skin and bones. They are going to give her a mineral oil/hairball remedy mix and tube it down her crop then hydrate her with vitamins and liquid. Then wait and see if she shows improvement, then take blood samples. Her poop didn't show anything out of the ordinary.

I asked him to please do everything he possibly can for her. He said he will.

I always feel bad for anyone that has a problem with their pet, now it's my turn. At the vet's I kept scratching her ears and neck and talking to her, she kept one eye open looking at me as I talked to her.

This is so hard.

Hope Gertie pulls through.

I mushed up canned spinach in my yogurt when I dealt with this a couple of weeks ago. At first she was like YUCK! The way that I got her to eat it was to entice her by putting a few small blades of grass on top the first time. She loves her grass! After that.. she LOVED her yogurt. Then, next thing I knew, she was gobbling it up. I only gave her about 2 tablespoons at a time in a small dish. She prefered it after it was out of the fridge for 10 minutes or so at first.. then after a while, it didn't matter to her.

I even soaked some layer pellets in a little olive oil and left them for her to eat at her leisure.

She did not lay eggs either... probably due to the stress of it all.

Awww...Ginny......so sorry Gertie is still having troubles. I'm keeping you both in my thoughts and hoping things will improve very soon. You're such a good feather-mom.

p.s. Where is your avian vet? Have you been pleased with him? It's been a struggle to find a good and caring one....
