Now that sounds like a good price. Where does the line start??

I think that is crazy - - good for the guy that is selling them but you have to think about what you are getting....you will more than likely get 8 eggs and normally about a 60% hatch rate for shipped eggs is good....so you are going to pay over $25.00 for each chick! If you get 4 to hatch - this is a bad time to ship eggs...the colder weather plays havoc on shipped eggs!!!

The guy selling them is making money but that is a little too much money for 6 eggs!!!

That is true, but my grandma taught me to look out for my friends too. I really have spent more than I can afford on eggs this year, my fault(I'm addicted

) but I found people who had nice birds that weren't out to gouge peoples pockets. I think it's horrible that people are charging outrageous prices, but of course this is just MY opinion. I am hesitant when buying eggs, anyone can say their lines are so and so's but how can you really know? It's all a gamble- buying, shipping, hatching.....it's all in the risks (and expense) you want to take. It's buyer beware and the customers that are driving the prices upward because they are still buying.
I would suggest waiting. There are plenty of people on this board that will sell eggs for a reasonable price next spring/summer, you just have to seek them out

Oh, just go look at my personal pages. I'm nuts and I know it.
I love Marans, I'm not rich, I have decent lines. Black Coppers are not laying yet!

compared to buying hatchery and "breeding your way up" to a decent darker egg, $100 is a deal compared to all the money you'd spend on feed to get there, not to mention your time, effort, worry, equipment wear and tear, hassle, predator losses, lossses from accidents and illnesses and canibalism. In breeding any kind of animal, it is cheapest to buy the best you can afford. Not only in CB marans either. Same goes for puppies, show kitties, cage birds, even guppies. Who here would bid $61 for four guppies? They still have more than a day to go on the auction! Just depends what you are into, and how "into" it you are.

I personally would spend that much on good lines, IF they were local. Shipped eggs are just so unpredictable, would stink to get a 0% hatch.

I would have no problem spending that kind of money if they were local either.
If I could pick them up and not risk shipping and I knew something about the breeder, good recommendations etc . I would spend that kind of money. I have spent alot of money on eggs before.
The breeder had good recommendations and the eggs were absolutely gorgeous, but I had a zero hatch.
It was not her fault in any way.
The shipping did a number on them and then who knows what else could have made them not hatch, sometimes its just the luck of the draw.
So if it is worth it to someone, you have the money and you know the risks then go for it.
All hatching eggs are a gamble no matter who they come from.
The only reason I advised against it in this case, is that the person is not someone who is already dealing with the breed.
I would recommend that he first look into the breed itself and weigh all the pros and cons.
Find out what lines are being bred, who has what lines etc.
Then make an informed purchase.
I don't want someone to spend alot of money on eggs when they may not know what they are getting into.
I think everyone here was just suggesting that he make an educated decision, no one was bad mouthing anyone.

Just so everyone knows, I have nothing against this seller. I didn't even look at who the seller was. I just think $100 for 6 eggs is way too much and that was the question orininally posted in this thread. I have contacted two copper marans breeders (Bev Davis and Cree Farms) and both sell their eggs for $60 per dozen.

In addition I do understand supply and demand economics and believe that if a seller can get $100 for 6 eggs then more power to them, but since lowcountrypoultry asked for opinions on whether to buy the eggs I gave my opinion from the perspective of a buyer.

Lot's of people are trying to "take advantage" of the current demand for bc eggs. When I stated that this seller was doing just that, I did not mean it was a bad thing to do. At the current prices, anybody with bc eggs would be crazy not to sell them on ebay.

I did look up the seller's completed listings and he did have 3 auctions for 6 bc marans eggs that were completed with winning bids of over $100 total price. His current listing is just at $101 including shipping with 1hr39min until completion, so arranging a private sale for $100 for 6 eggs would save money if you had to have the eggs right now, but a little patience could save you a lot of money.

I hope I didn't offend anyone this time
