Is this what you call a fart egg?

We got this crazy little egg the other day. The white one is a store large, next egg form our BR (I think), next a pullet egg or maybe a "big egg" from one of our banty girls, then "it". I cracked it, VERY hard shell, it had a white and a yolk but the yolk was lumpy so I threw it out. I am guessing its from one of our banty girls.

I'm guessing that "yolkless egg" is a correct description for your kids to use in reports and everyday language.

Thanks for the reminder that BYC is an all-ages forum!

Seriously. I really didn't think fart was a bad word, and this is what I have heard it called before. I truly didn't mean to offend by using the word fart. So if you could enlighten us, what is the correct terminology for this?

I got an egg like that a while back from one of my EE pullets...it was a pretty pale turquoise. She had just started to lay. I blew the egg out and painted a scene on it!

I love having chickens, you learn new things every day!

Oh and BTW, I've seen the term "fart egg" in a reference book about chickens before so I guess it isn't quite all that bad. I just hope your 4-H kids don't get that book to do reports from. It would be a shame if they innocently used that term from a book and got disqualified.

We are adults and we know the word is crude. We do not accept crudeness from our children or our 4-Hers and if we are happy that is the worst they are saying we are falling way short!
In 4-H youth learn by doing and the adults lead and set an example for the youth. In my opinion this is not a good example. It is not a bad (curse) word , it is a crude word.
It was only a suggestion for the site. If its asking too much I will simply take this site off the resource list for our 4-Hers so adults can continue to speak the way we (educators) try , daily, to teach our youth not to speak. .

Like I said, I meant no offense, and quite honestly, I don't see that word as being crude. You can call it by a variety of other words, but it is what it is.

I have never called it anything other than that, and taught my kids to call it that. I am not considered crude at all.

And you never did clarify what the proper terminology for this egg is.

So I went ahead and looked it up on a number of websites. Guess what they called it? yep, a fart egg.

BYC is a family friendly site.

You are seriously going to take this site off a reference list because one thread uses the word "fart"?

I think that whether or not the word "fart" is crude or not depends on the adults around you as you grew up. My Mom would never use the word "fart", but that is the word my MIL used. So I can see how some people would think it is a crude word, but in the instance of a fart egg, I don't think it is crude at all.

I closed this before it started a war.

While I understand the concern, the term used is a common one and in common usage. It relates to "wind egg" and you can see where it follows to the current terminology.

Looking through the thread I do see some crudeness that I will correct. However "fart egg" is not crude, it is an age old expression. As the wife of an elementary school teacher, I am well aware that this subject is not new to the students.

If I were student doing a report, I think I could find a different phrase to use, like yolkless egg.
And I would do it out of respect for the teacher I looked up to.

I, too would hate to see this site taken away as a resource for students.

This is the best resource bar none for chicken information on the internet. With 15000 + members the vast experience here is not to be found anywhere online.
