ISABELLE LEGHORNS IN USA!

Pics

Above is the younger of the two Isabel cockerels that I have -- the last photo in the sequence is the smooth tail feathers, and the second to last is his hackle/shoulder/wing area wherwe the darkest feathers in the wing bar seem to grow v e r y s-l-o-w-l-y. He is beautiful but flighty. Just set some eggs from him today. ETA: LOL< He's breeding not laying>

Below is the older Isabel cockerel -- his coloration is more blended - the pict is a bit faded - close up shows his tail - overall lighter than the younger guy's and faintly you can see where the lavender genes are diluting the black and thin tiny indications of black pigment

If Isabel was going to be my end result -- I would work hard on whiter earlobes clearer duckwing patterns -

Especially on the wing, a smooth definite bar above the wing triangle -- which I think would look better as lavender - these seem to be hinting toward a light peach -- but I want also to have a strongly defined color difference at the top of the wing -- where the lavender genes have diluted the normal red to a kind of peach color in the above.

Below are some females:

IMO lavender-brown is one of the most striking and beautiful plumage patterns ever! Definitely my photography doesn't do them justice. Thanks again to Candace and Lisa for making these chicks available -- Love 'em.
For the females - -I would look for the more pink, peach, light salmon breast feathers...... Again if my objective were Isabel I would pair the more muted females with the more colorful male and see what happens.

Anyone else have juveniles, pullets cockerels to share photos of?

Look at those cockerels! They are both stunning!

It is interesting that a breed/color that on the surface seems simple enough is so much more challenging that I expected. So many things still to improve with these guys! My top priority is feather quality though. I ultimately opted to cull all my isabel males due to inferior feather quality. The very young cockerel pictured above has, thus far, good feather quality. I'm excited by both that and saturation level of his color, although he's not yet showing any golden straw color in his neck yet like his hatch mate is starting to display. We will see. The other dark one looks very similar to him but not quite as dark gray. Ironically I believe all three of the chicks I kept from that hatch are cockerels. Excellent luck of the draw since I'm still looking for a better quality cockerel or two to replace my 2015/20016 breeders.

While studying my pullets and marveling how both the lighter silvery looking ones look just as nice as the darker peachy ones, I contemplate whether I should keep two lines of this marvelous color - one to breed towards white/silver overlays and the other to breed towards the darker golden overlays. In addition to the lighter hackle color, the silvery pullets also tend to have more even lighter gray body, while the hens with darker hackles tend to have darker gray body with a light brown "dusting" and peach breast. I also notice variances in their feather patterns, especially around the neck. There's so much to obsess over with these birds!

@ChicKat have your pullets started laying? Mine are starting to come on line now. I've gotten a few eggs from that pen, most likely from the same pullet. My hatches were spread out so more of mine will be coming online about every week or two. They are right on time, too, at 21 weeks. Squeee!!!!

thanks cj -- agree that there is a lot to consider with this pattern! I think that it will be undoubted that they are lavender-brown and that the variations are within the spectrum of Isabel. Remembering someone on her really likes the pastel and others want more color definiation.

I'm getting little white pullet bullets from that pen -- but I think of the 11 pullets in there, only 1 or 2 are 'on line' at present. Have yet to get two eggs in the same day. Once all 11 are laying -- I will be dealing with a lot of daily eggs.

It's fun and exciting quest, isn't it. Keep us up to date as your cockerels develop!

Here is my main rooster and one of his hens today. If you got chicks or eggs from me these were their father and maybe the mother! I hope to have some pictures of some new Isabelles to post soon who have Big White Earlobes! I think I've got the earlobe issue worked out. These guys will be going to a new home.

Is that how they both hold their wings? I know it has been hot as well... you live here, you know.

You are correct! It is hot! She is outside "taking some air" in the best southern girl in the summertime tradition! She will lay in the water too, in the chicken version of skinny dippin'.
