Here comes the purist in me. I generally try not to mix species from different continents as they (ancestrally) have different water parameter requirements, especially if the fish are wild-caught. It really depends on what your goals are. Breeding or display?

The betta will be fine with the red-tailed shark provided the aquarium is large enough. They are really chill fish if they are a single specimen. I kept mine in a tank with harlequin rasboras and a pair of pearl gouramis.

You can. It depends on the species. Dwarf cichlids like cockatoos and rams are easily placed with other fish, even when breeding. Angelfish and Discus are cichlids, and they are often housed in communities. Kribensis are a small African cichlid that I've housed with African Ropefish, African Butterflies, and Congo Tetras.

I've kept Firemouth cichlids with Swordtails in an S. Am. biotype aquarium. They worked well and the young swordtails provided additional food for the cichlids.

I would not mix Old World and New World cichlids, and I wouldn't mix Mbuna with fish from other African lakes. Be aware the fish from Lake Malawi can experience Malawi Bloat, so be sure they are getting enough vegetable matter in their diet.

@Kiki, is that you?
Totally missed this post.

I wonder if you had a male Red tail? I had both sexes I believe, and the female (I assume) was larger (as is standard) and ran the tank. I even had her in a cichlid tank for a while and she held her own, and could easily out maneuver them all. She lived to be like 9 or 10 years old.

Both would dog fight with my Chinese algae eaters. The beta I had got chased so after some rearrangements they were introduced to a fairly planted 30 gallon (with only one red-tail, which gave the beta a little privacy.

I have kept S. American dwarf cichlids, Keyholes, Curviceps, Convicts, Oscars, but not Africans so that would be new for me.
