I free feed my birds and they are not obese. But you will want to cover those trays. They are gonna be standing in them and throwing feed everywhere.

I free feed as well. Never had any issues with obese birds

Yep, me too. I don't know that I would be able to tell if a hen was obese or not. They look good as fatties. I will let the feeder run out sometimes so they clean up the ground. And, no feed ever stays in there long enough to mold.

I think @sdm is a game bird guy and maybe different with those.

Built a tote feeder for my boids, holds 4, 40# sacks of feed. probably could hold 5, maybe 6, it's still not full.
$20 (on sale) for a 39 quart tote and $5 for 3 dustpans.
