Isa's Homestead Happenings and Hangout

Any advice on brooding in my coop? I'm getting rid of my five ladies this weekend and getting chicks. I feel like it's time to start fresh. I'm hoping to get POL and not worry about brooding but I don't know if that will pan out. So, thoughts from anyone who's brooded outside without a mama hen?
So, I ended up setting up a maternity ward in my coop. (It's also the injured chicken pen when I don't have chicks)

I have found it makes it a lot easier to have the momma hen and chicks separated for a couple of weeks while slowly allowing the chicks to integrate with the flock.

... It's possible I'm just paranoid. I have heard that you don't have to do this, but it's the way that works for me.

This is an older picture, but you can kind of get the idea. Yes, the birds roost on the lids at night. The lids are going to be a vastly different design because of it, but the premise for the sectioned off area sit works. :)

This will be just the chicks, no older hens. I like your setup though, noose and all😁
