Tonight was pretty dang dramatic! First my chickens door to the coop magically shuts, and i ave to go find them in a tree in the middle of the night... And then i go into the barn to clean up and guess what happened? My brooder lamp exploded.. I mean sure i got it from walmart.. but this is crazy. It was only my 2nd time turning it on, and bam! It exploded with fire and smoke! (minus the fire part) It scared the living daylights outta me! Good thing i was just testing it and there was no chicks in there! Its ridiculous. And dont be like me thinking that these sad stories of fire and exploding lamps dont happen cause they do!

Here is some pics to prove it:

Looks like you had a 250 watt bulb, most comon heat lamps ar only rated for 150 watt bulb, it's the more expensive ones that are rated for 250 watt bulbs, do you know what yours was rated for? Also extreme cold to extreme hot can make them explode too. Glad there was no fire!

it was a 250, i just grabbed the hotter one because i have to heatup a whole stall.... And it wasnt too cold.. about 45? And it happened AS SOON as i pluged it in.. And the bottom of the bulk is still there.. in the lamp. It just like broke off? IDK

The reason it exploded was because of the high wattage you used, not because the light was red. I read another post of yours'.

even the smaller bulbs can do that, its one reason i switched to a heat emmiter (they are rated to last 5 years, i've got one going on 3), they don't expolde, plus your babies get a normal day/night light pattern

it could just be a faulty bulb, no water not the wattage, just bad luck

Yipes! Whatever the cause of the explosion, I'm glad it wasn't any worse. You're okay, your chickens are fine, the coop is not a pile of ashes, and hopefully no cuts from flying glass. What a shock that must have been!
