It feels like FOREVER!!! UPDATE!!!! MAJOR UPDATE!!!!!!!

i'm not waiting right now, but w/ my first chickies it took FOREVER!!!! finnally i looked one day, not expecting to find any, and there were 2!!! i blew them to save the shells (which i still have) and cooked the smallest batch of scrambled eggs ever and all five of us tried a tiny piece

the first eggs are always the best!

I am glad I am not alone! I just came in from feeding everyone and having the 'egg talk' again! I tell them every morning I love them just as they are...but when ever they are ready....it would be okay with me

I too saw that post about the 13 week old laying an egg - that one REALLY got me going! But sadly, no omelets today until I get to work...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having the "egg talk" with my girls. I had to have it again with them this morning. I even bribed them with mealworms. They're 19 weeks 1 day old today and still nothing. I've noticed some are investigating the nesting boxes but nothing more. Some of them are further along with the redness of their combs and waddles but I haven't noticed anyone squatting. I'm actually not sure what that even looks like. I did notice "Big Papa", my only rooster, started mating with certain girls this week. I'm wondering if the severe heat these last 2 weeks is delaying the first egg.

I have 10 almost 18 weekers! My three yo daughter keeps going into the coop to check her plastic eggs she put in the nest box! We are all anxiously awaiting that first egg. A few combs and wattles are turning really red and my pr and bo have been squatting with their wings out when I pet them....

I have 8 girls that are 19 weeks old, one started laying last week(my first blue egg), which I was super excited about but now I want the rest of my girls to start, so it kinda starts all over again, lol! The waiting, the waiting. I also have chicks, 7 weeks old, 2 weeks old and some in the bator, I guess it never gets old for me.

One bonus I've noticed by my girl that started laying is now, she seeks me out if I am outside, jumps in my lap, loves to follow me around, and scratch her chin, before she started laying she was always very nervous around me. So I am loving this new sweetness from her.

This is great info. My leghorn is about 14-15 weeks & I'm expecting her to start laying soon. Her comb has gotten very pink in the last week, as has the face of the barred rock! All 5 birds are making clucking noises now, though some mostly still make the cheepy-peepy sound, as well. The 2 birds that I think are close to laying (the ameraucana/EE and the leghorn) are only clucking right now and only make the cheepy-peepy sounds when they are going to bed at night.

I guess I'm gonna head over to the feed store this morning to get some fake eggs to put in the nesting boxes. So exciting! I'm guessing I'm about 1-2 weeks away from eggs from the leghorn and about a month away from everybody else.

We are not so patiently waiting for our first egg also. On weds DD called me at work & said one of the girls was making a strange loud clucking sound. I told her to check for an egg & call me back pronto! I didnt get anything done for 10 Mins till she called back. False alarm $!#&*%%$!! chickens.

Mrs. K :

Not to highjack, but when I read the post, I was thinking, I can hardly wait either, but not for the first egg, but I just put eggs under a broody!

Patience is a virtue. For those of you waiting for your first eggs, maybe it will help, if you know, that while the first eggs is special, it is still fun, years later, to find eggs each day!

Signs to look for: Bright red combs and bright yellow legs, egg squat. Then you are getting close! Put fake eggs in your nests then, and cross your fingers. AND if you are sneaking down to the house a couple times a day just to check and see, everyone here will understand, and most of us, are right there with you.

Yeah, hatching is even worse. Those last 3 days just stand still. But then you have chicks, so it's worth it.

My first chickens were a full grown hen, rooster and three chicks. My hen took FOREVER to (start to?) lay. It was every day for like two months I would check the nest boxes, lol. Then with the pullets I figured I could expect an egg anytime after they hit 16 weeks. So i calculated the date, prolly even marked it on the calendar

but i guess i calculated wrong, because earlier then i thought, there was a teeny pullet egg in the nest box

I'm feeling all your pain. I bought my first chicken family at 9 weeks. That was 6 weeks ago. So my little girls are 15 weeks now. I have a month plus to go. I have 7 Delawares, 2 white leghorns and 2 red sex links. It will be interestiong to see if one breed starts laying sooner.
