O..Thank you!!! I have a flock dog...singular. Have always found that more than one gets pack like indeed.... If I remember correctly? a lot of our breeds here in the states come from the UK......right? I love Sussex...very personable birds.
Yes, for those who might wish to sneer at this story, my takeaway from it is that at least SOMEONE in that family is keeping heritage breed chickens and supporting the art of poultry-keeping across the pond.
Kudos for Prince Charles and I'm sure he's just as upset with losing his birds as any of us would be in similar circumstances.
poor guy! If any one needs chicken therapy, I would guess somebody in that much of the spotlight would need it. I have read some on his HighGrove estate's high tech "green" systems, many of which are prototypes for sustainable systems real world. I would love to visit there. Oh, and at least see his coop security!
It is very appreciative to have royal families and celebrities having chickens and reap the benefits of having fresh eggs. At least Prince Charles enjoys organic foods and he supports the "green" efforts as well. I am glad he has several breeds of chickens, even he may have certain favorites, like the Welsummers and Sussexes but I am certain he likes them all. When he goes out to his mansion, I am sure he might have a few chickens at his feet while he is sitting there relaxing out there. If he could not ride or hunt anymore, I am certain this would be his favorite pastime as well as ours which we love to sit out there and watch the chickens do their thing. Its calming and I think Pres. Obama can reap the health benefits of relaxation of having a few chickens at his feet after a hard day in the office.
I am not sure what would "pedigree" would be.....does the HRH's chickens have names, sire and dam, etc. or do they go by sire name lines only. I would love to have personal information on his poultry, his philopshy of raising chickens, how urban folks can raise chickens, etc. and what his future goals for the breed themselves. Does he show his birds?
Well if he sells his surplus eggs to the market, I bet they are a little higher than the "common folks" eggs and I am sure if anyone buys his eggs, someone can incubate his eggs and get their own chicks directly from his stock. That would be impressive LOL!
He has backyard chickens, like everyone else here. You have the finest birds, the mediocre birds, the worst birds. But his goal of fine birds is the same.
Gee, glad I put this up! While I don't really "get" royalty stuff (since I live in the USA), I respect it, and I do think it's very cool that he has chickens, and is promoting green living.
When it comes down to it, we're all just chicken owners who love our birds no matter what they are or how they look. I WOULD love to get some fertile eggs from there! I could give them names like Victoria, Elizabeth, and Princess. That would be cool! There is a huge backyard chicken movement in the UK, and I think it's great that someone in a position of influence is supportive of it instead of scoffing at it. Go Princey!
All chicken lovers should be welcome here, and we all face the same issues no matter how much or how little we have.
